  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
48' MOTOR YACHT-Series I (1981 - 1984)
The brownish blobs in the picture look like mineral growths on the inside of the hull. This was taken looking aft from the floor hatch in the master head of a 1981 Series I 48MY. They are out of reach so I can't easily get a sample, but they appear to be growing from the hull, and not necessairly from the bolts in the region. Thoughts?

looks like something that washed down from the side ,Saw Dust?? , Is that a stainless lock nut on a bronze bolt for your strut??? I would check that and correct if so..............................Pat

Bob,

Keep a close watch on that stuff... remember some years ago they made a movie about the evil creeping slime?

Looks like debris that has washed back from somewhere forward.

Visually it doesn't look like debris or the 'green slime'. I'll try to find a short handled hoe (not ho') to grab some and do a little back yard chemistry on it.

I think Doc and Fred are correct....

Sawdust for sure..looks exactly like what I found....stick a vacuum hose in there...or a stick or piece of plastic or even a mop handle with something sticky on it...varnish, even water, grease ...pull out a few pieces....it is NOT mineral nor anything alive...

I like to remove constuction debris because sooner of later it gets wet...and if clean dries much sooner...

I also now dump few cups (total) bleach of bleach in in various bilge compartments where water collects...the scented bleach replaces any damp aromas and keeps bad things from hatching...

Stainless with bronze is fine they are next to each other on the chart.

"Stainless with bronze is fine they are next to each other on the chart."

But they are not...never do this!!!!..you are ASKING for trouble....nothing beats silicon bronze for immersed nuts and bolts that's what Hatteras used them.
Stainless by itself is stronger but there are many formulations (302,302,318,etc) and also ac tive and passive types and crevice corrosion can be a problem especially with foreign manufacturers...
