Wow, I have heard of the GLCC for years, but I just first joined. I was amazed when the cruising log books showed up weighing in at 32 pounds  . If anyone here ever cruises the Great Lakes or the Great Circle, you have to check out this resource. The detail of each harbor and anchorage is something that you can't get anywhere else. I see Doug Shuman is listed in the membership directory. Who else from here is a member?

Look up William Stephan boat EVELYNN S (dad) Otto Grossman "ARGAIL" pal and Allen LeClaire (surveyor pal).
These guys were charter members in about 1950. I have the original book (1) from that year (2lbs :) )
Great club --is membership still by invite only, or unless your a legacy! Better get a yachting etiquette book!! wws

Sky,

Now I know why your planing speed was a concern......I can't believe you asked for the paper version. The DVD version works great and weighs 3.2 ounces. I really like the info there. I used it extensively when we went to the North Channel last year. Really excellent notes on specific great anchorages with stuff that's not on the charts at all. We have not done any of the social gathering stuff, primarliy because we weren't at the right places at the right times.

Their info on non-great lakes cruising is spotty and sometimes outdated, but for the great lakes, they're good.

Doug,
I thought about the DVD version, but somehow it just didn't seem right. I know, get with the times. But I still prefer paper charts, too. I don't plan to keep all 4 volumes aboard. I'll just take the parts that I need for each specific cruise.

Bill,
Yes, I had to have a sponsor to join. A couple at our marina who have a 55 Fleming were kind enough to do so.

Since someone here sent me a PM and wanted info on the club, I will post their website for those who may be interested. It is:

Great Cruising Information Source and the social gatherings are lots of fun too. I agree with the paper copies and remove the pertinent pages for the day's run. I believe the membership is in the area of 2800.
