Just got back from Los Angeles, got to go down to Long Beach on Monday and did the Queen Mary Tour. Wow what a ship. never know it was so fast.
average speed on crossing 30.6kts, rumor to have top end of 38kts in ideal seas.
She is in fairly good shape for a ship completed in 1934. Engine room is impressive. 4 shafts, each has a thrust bearing the size of a mini van. Saw some water pumps that were 25000 gallons per min; that is right not an hour but a min. that would fill the average swimming pool in about 30 to 45 seconds. Herd alot of tourists making the comment that they could not imagin how loud the engine room would have been. I thought to myself, most likely not very loud, steam turbine engines and the boilers were not even in the same part of the ship. boilers were most likely louder than the steam turbines.

I took digital photos, may have to send them to Dan and have him post them, I cant shrink them properly.

Go back to my Thread called "Downsizing Images". I was told about Irfamveiw (www.irfanview.com).

One of the responses outlines simple instructions.

Though I've never seen the QM I think it's sad that such a mighty lady could not be retrofited and cruise again.

My brother lives in Long Beach and we fly out there at least once a year. We ride bikes to the Q.M.and stop at the shops arournd her and did the tour about 10 yrs ago and of the Spruce Goose when it was housed next to her.
Couldnt imagine what it must of been like in the Q.M. engine room when we was doing 30 plus knots.

I really want to get out there to see tha Queen Mary some day. My father shipped out to england on her in WWII, 80th Division, 317th Infantry Regiment, part of Patton's Third Army. One thing I read about her was that in normal passenger service she carried maybe 1,500, don't remember exactly, but as a troop transport in WWII carried 16,000! And I'm sure very few had been to sea. Must have been fun.

a real SHIP.. not one of those floating hotels!

i drove to LA a couple of years ago and stayed on board for 2 nights, car club annual meet... it's a real neat hotel ... they added modern convenienced but kept a lot of the old things like the fans in the staterooms and the salt water fixtures in the bathtubs. same price as other hotels, well worth it !

now if only the France / Norway could have been converted like that instead of being beached on an indian beach :-(

Jag hood in the pic?

Is that a Russian sub in the background? We sub commanders want to know! ws

Nice photo, P!! Got a beautiful ship and the hood of a beautiful car. Too bad about the Ford in the pic. ;)

yes that is a Russian Sub, paint yours black and put a red star on it and join the fleet

WOW, call me "Mr. Observant!" I didn't see the sub at all:o

I kinda prefer the Baltik Grei--UnterzeeBoot colors. Dont laugh; Ive got 20 gallons of awlgrip navy gray from a resto job a few years ago. ws

I did not do the sub tour, did not have time. looks kind of cool from the outside

THANKS !! OOPS- C'mon the trip north in April. Taking reservations now! We plan on surface running only. When else can a civilian get a 10 day ride on a bonafide sub?
I would question submerging in a river with a 15 foot depth LOL. ws

yes, it's a soviet sub, didn't have time to tour it unfortunately... instead, we toured the Peterson auto. museum, including the "vault" where they have a few very interesting cars, and Jay Leno's collection which makes the Peterson look like a local roadside attraction :-)

yes, that's an E-type bonnet in the foreground...

Mike, the Ford (entirely designed and built by Jaguar though... i think it has more german parts than Ford's) well, that's mine :-) was mine actually, i sold it a little over a year ago. it was a great car, 370hp/390lbft but i didn't really need 2 cars and prefered keeping the e-type.

mark, the boiler rooms are empty, appears they took out tanks and boilers when she was decommissioned. Not sure how worried they were about asbestos in 1967 as you could still buy it then. According to the story board on the ship , Cunard put it up for sale and only considered bids from those who were going to preserve it and show the ship in a dignified mannor.
