Got dem battery blues

I replaced my 8V batteries with Rolls batteries. They are the OEM for Hatteras and come with a 7 year warranty.

Are you really saving anything when compared to 4 Rolls that fit your battery boxes at $382 each(last I checked)?

I am seeking to replace all of my Deka 8-195 batteries with Rolls. It seems as if the 8HHG-21-P is the closest in size, but the length seems longer than the base of the OEM battery boxes. Plese let me know if that is your experience with this, I would hate to have to remove the OEM boxes and replace them. Thank you.

I went with eight GC-8 batteries in a 4S2P configuration in both engine rooms and built new battery boxes. I had Battery Cables USA build the interconnect cables out of 2/0 (00) cable. I did the battery installation myself (ex auto mechanic). The upside is these batteries spin my 12-71s over VERY nicely. Much better than the four 819 8v battery setup ever did. Also, the 16 batteries were far cheaper than the Rolls and much easier to obtain. So I'm happy with the swap so far.

A few downsides... 1) It was a royal pain to carry 16 batteries down the 100 yard dock to get to my slip! And also 8 of the old 819 cores back out. 2) The 8 batteries per ER take up more room. 3) Having to build new battery boxes. And 4) Just plain more batteries to maintain/check.

If you do a swap like this yourself, do remember that the posts on the GC-8s are so much closer together and that raises the risk of shorting the terminals. A wise boat mechanic once told me to carry only ONE tool into the engine room at a time when doing battery work so as to reduce the risk of dropping a wrench across the terminals and burning the boat down to the water line. I used a ratchet with the appropriate socket and taped up the handle so that it was impossible to short across terminals with it too.
