Resurrecting this conversation with a new solution
After getting into this issue with my windlass, I had to shelve it for almost a year dealing with A/C issues, and other more immediate electrical problems. The Admiral and I agreed that so long as the anchor could be dropped, we were comfortable with local short trips without a working windlass to retrieve - If we needed to drop it, we were probably going to be calling SeaTow anyway...
I've still got the battery bank in the generator room that was not connected to anything except the charger possibly, but given the age of those batteries I believe it's in my best interest to remove those and replace with new. The recommendation from another Hatteras owner, who's extensively renovated his 70's vintage 58' was to run a new cable for the windlass. He said that everything he's seen/heard from others leads back to just rewire it rather than try to reinvent it. Considering that whomever "disconnected" the forward head from the holding tank simply cut the hose 6 inches from the elbow into the tank, I'd say he's on the right track. Starting over may be the best course in this case, rather than placing trust in wiring that I can't be sure was disconnected but not otherwise altered.
