Generator Exhaust Into Galley

Our 8KW geny exhausts on the port side. Our galley sink thru hull is also on the port side and just aft of the exhaust thru hull. Depending on the sea conditions we'll get exhaust into the galley when running the 8KW. We have tried covering the sink drain with a drain stop or wet cloth but if the conditions are right the back pressure pops the drain cover/wash cloth off allowing the exhaust in.

Does it stand to reason if we put a clam shell on the galley drain thru hull that would solve our problem?

Our surveyor suggested clam shells on both of the generator exhaust thru hulls as well, thoughts?

If you can fit a P or U shape on the drain as it exits the sink.
Then the water trapped there will block any fumes.

A P or U trap would not work as the OP said that the pressure is great enough to blow off a rubber sink stopper It's possible both would work but I would reroute the drain. That's a lot of pressure. I would block off the current sink drain and move to another drain if possible. That's a dangerous situation and risking your life.

Whatever pressure there is has to be from the wind hitting the side of the hull so a clam shell should help as well as a trap. I can imagine there being that much pressure to over come a trap.

Boats built to ABYC standards will not allow that situation to exist. They require a minimum distance between sink drains and exhaust discharges. So this must have been a problem in a lot of boats in the past. They allow a p trap as a solution, put as Pascal stated the rolling of the boat is probably causing air pressure up the drain.

Never thought of adding a P trap, but as stated the pressure might create Old Faithful. I love and will try both the P trap and clamshell. The current clam shells are gloss black, any suggestions on paint or just good old marine gloss black? I'll get the shells at Sam's, was there yesterday watching the Raptors prep for the show this weekend. Sams is directly under short final for 10L at FLL. I love the sound of freedom!!

FWIW, waves, wakes can pop up the drain plug in my master head lavatory drain tied up at my marina. It’s also not unusual for the entire drain plug assembly to be laying in the lavatory from underway wave action. My lavatory is probably a good bit lower than your sink drain, though.

If I decide to put the P trap with the clam shell it will remain until Old Faithful blows, once. I’ll have to remember and remind the admiral to always run the disposal before we depart.

P trap solved the issue for me. I made my own out of PVC and put it in gene space bellow galley. Put union in for clean out, cause then it never stops up. My through hull already had clam shell on it.
