My Onan 23kw generator has developed steamy exhaust. It is holding its thermostat temperature. The thru hull is clear and the strainer and basket are new.

The new strainer is slightly smaller than the older strainer. Could this be restricting the flow and causing steamy exhaust?

I saw air in the strainer basket when running so I replaced the strainer cap and the air disappeared with the generator exhaust now less steamy.

Your thoughts are appreciated.

Usually if you air being sucked in the strainer, you will also have a small leak when the generator is off. Pretty easy to spot.

could it be the outside air temp. or humidity level? my genset steams more during different times of different weather patterns. been doing it for 19 years now.

Also check the impeller, mine started steaming, and when I pulled off the water pump cover, I found more than half of the veins had been ripped off. Cleaned and reinstalled a new one and the steaming went away.
