  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
48' YACHT FISHERMAN (1972 - 1975)
My flybridge helm has VDO (electronic?) gauges beside the old non-working mechanical gauges. I'm wondering if I am able to duplicate these gauges at the lower helm station by simply running the second set in series with these gauges, or do I need a set of senders for each gauge set?

Using the electronic gauges at the lower helm may give me hope of being able to fully open my gauge cluster panel, thus giving me some better access to the wiring and steering hydraulics that are in that area of the vessel. Right now the oil lines that are running to the mechanical oil gauges at the lower helm station are stopping me from opening the gauge panel fully. There may be other short obstructions, but for sure the oil lines are the shortest things at this point. I also like the idea of limiting the oil lines that are running through the vessel.
Thanks!

You'll probably need dual gauge sending units to run two sets of gauges.

You should look at a post called show us your helm. Some great ideas in there.

There are pressure and temp senders for dual (matching) gauges you may need to purchase.
You may need to check the wiring to ensure the leads are in series for this (normal installation). No telling what mods have been made to your wire harnesses.

I think the plan may be to move those gauges down to the lower helm if they are all actually electronic - then add a Nmea converter and have the gauges be fully digital up top on the MFDs. That will mean I don't have to change all the senders and buy new gauges, because these gauges won't be matchable without getting lucky online anyway, as these VDOs are discontinued.
Heck I could move these down to the engine room and go all MFD up top. That would clean up a LOT of wiring, capillary heat tubes and oil piping.

It looks like you have some VDO gauges Amd some Stewart-Warner manual gauges. You definitely need dual senders to add another set of gauges.

If I am understanding you correctly, my flybridge gauges were not all electronic, the gear pressure gauges were still mechanical up top.
