Thanks jackman.

I just had a thought of what changed recently, Racor filter may have check valve problem, not certain but i am goint to disasselble and check them first thing. I believe we are dealing with multi problems, carburators which may have been failing over time and the racors being a sudden change.

Hey I watch House and they do alot of diagnostics on patients and find mult problems etc.

You can't read total advance with a timing light on the dampner. It isn't marked that high. Set initial advance to 10 degrees and note that it advances as you add throttle. The rest is acedemic. I would connect a rubber hose to the fitting near the tank after dissasembling that to make sure the ball check is clear. Connect the other end to the Crusader secondary filter. Try that and repeat for the other engine and tank. I really suspect those Racors. Our 36C had only the engine mounted filters until last spring when I had to add filters ahead of them for the Navman fuel flow transmitters. Fuel filters on gas engines are not as important as on Diesels. One other important thing to check and change are the filters at the inlet of the quadrajets. You remove the steel line, (lots of swearing needed here). Now remove the large brass fitting that the line goes into. The plastic filter is inside the big fitting. Don't lose the spring and be aware of the direction that the little filter goes in. New ones are available at either marine or auto parts stores. :)

You can read advance if you use an advance timing light like I do. It must be the advance type. Set the engine to 3000rpms and turn the knob on the timing light until the mark on the harmonic balancer hits zero. You know what your advance is by what the timing light reads. Works fine that way...but you need the advance timing light.

Maynard, Does the spring go before the filter or after the filter. I changed mine
and can't remember. I assume it goes before.

Wow, am I getting old. I can't remember. I am pretty sure the spring goes in first then the filter with the solid end sitting on and pushing the spring in. This would make the gas go through the filter as soon as it comes in, but would allow a plugged filter to retract and still allow some gas flow. So spring first into the female threaded boss on the carb, then brass cap unit withfilter facing so that plugged end of filter pushes on spring. Be carefull not to cross thread the big cap assy. It is real easy to do. Tighten the sh** out of it or it will leak. Replace the fuel line fitting into the brass cap and, yes, tighten it the same way. I have had terrible problems stopping the gas leaks at that assembly.

Yea I know what you mean. The 1st time I took it apart I just put a wrench on the big brass fitting and turned. Not smart as I had tweaked the fuel line and had to replace it. Oh well dumb is as dumb does. Thanks for the reply!

Steve,

Boats Lie. Do not believe anything you see. You probably need to replave the macerator to get back up to 4,000RPM's.

Floats? Needle valves and maybe even fuel pumps can cause an engine to run slow but both is rare.

Did anyone adjust anything on the distributors or the ignition system lately?

By the way I don't watch House. I watch the chick he works with.

Ok, Problem solved, Timing was off, port engine was at 12 before and starboard engine was at top dead center appears that when i timed that one about 2 yrs ago i did not tighten the bolt on the distributor clamp, been moving slowly over last 2 yrs. Compression ck was impressive, about 155 to 160 each cyl among all 16 cyl. most cyl were within a pound of each other. ran it up and got about 4200 on one motor and 4050 on the other, i attrubute the lower rpms to the carburators which still need to be rebuilt. also bottom slime. any how this is way better than 2700 rpms.

I did assemble the racors properly by the way.
