  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
42' CONVERTIBLE (1971 - 1978)
I was testing the famed seaworthiness of my Hatteras on a trip back from the Bahamas and had a helm seat pedestal come loose in it's deckplate. Has anyone had any success in tightening one of these up. I contacted Garelick to see what was under the plate before I end up removing the salon headliner and finding out I can't repair it but they have not replied. It is an oldish one with a bulbous area on the pedestal just above the deckplate.

is the pipe loose from the flange, or is the flange loose from the floor that it mounts to? bigbill

It's the pipe loose in the flange. I'm hoping there is a bolt or something under there i can tighten.

On my 43C, the PO just cut an access hole in the headliner, about 10 x 10, under the pedestal. He then framed it with pine and stapled the cut edges of the headliner to the frame. Finally, he took a piece of luan, about 12 x 12 and glued headliner material to it, and screwed it to the frames using trim washers. It looks quite good, and gives me access to the underside of the pedestals.

An added bonus was the fact that the stbd side access lined up perfectly over my gennie when I replaced it last year, giving me a place to hang the winch when removing it.

If you need to replace the pedestal, I have an extra in the garage that you can have for the price of shipping. Just give me the pipe diameter and height to be sure it is a match.

Bob, can you check your spare pedestal and see how the pipe is secured into the deckplate. Is there anything to tighten up?
Thanks.

I'll check it when I get home.. I'm in my store right now. I think it's welded, but I'm not sure.

I just replaced mine because the pipe to flange joint is welded and it broke.

Ah, not quite what I wanted to hear but thankyou gents for replying. If you could confirm that Bob and I'll get a new one ordered before starting on the job. Just hope the installer used a threaded plate or blind nuts .................!

The helm pedestal for the captain's chair was bolted through my bridge deck on our 37. There is an access panel in the headliner in the salon to get to the fittings.
