I have both an AC and a DC (32 volt) Galleymaid water pumps (Model 10) on my boat. I usually only use the AC pump. I was away for a week and when I came back to the boat, the pressure switch didn't shut down the pump when there was no pressure, so the pump continued to run..and run...and run. I shut it down with the breaker. The pump was hot to the touch. When cool, I opened up the pump and took out what was left of the stator, cleaned the housing and replaced with a new stator. The rotor looked fine, however the spring assembly looked a little messed up. Upon priming, the pump leaked like a sieve.

So, in the meantime, I switched over to the 32 volt pump and it seemed to labor. Eventually, the pump started to really heat up and smoke started coming out of the motor and you had that strong smell of burnt electrical wires.

Any recommendations? Rebuild? Replace? Any idea what the costs would be? It would make a nice winter project. The water system is winterized at this point courtesy of a 110v water pump with hose connections to suck the antifreeze from a bucket and another hose connection fitted to the dockside water inlet.

Thank you.

Larry - check out Razz Marine in Florida as a source for new, rewired and rebuilt GM pumps. Good folks to work with.

Have you tried Galleymaid? I've found them to be helpful.

Larry,

I had a burnt out 32v Water Pump motor burn out back in August. I called GalleyMaid directly and they had me send the motor back to them and they rebuilt everything for about $230.00 U.S. It came back great. It looked new and ran like a charm even a new decal.

The GM 32v pump is essentially a stater motor. When mine froze up two years ago I took it to a automotive stater/alternator shop and had it re-wound for about $80.00. Continues to work just fine.

I agree with Chris. It is just a starter motor. Take it to a local shop and you will save $$$.

Thank you for the help. Would an alternator/starter shop also be able to rebuild the 110volt pump so that it doesn't leak? I know a great shop in the area that rebuilt one of my starters earlier this year in less than one day.

Call DEPCO pumps in Tampa.

You can take the 110v pump to any electric motor repair shop (pool pump, furnace motors) and they should be able to do it. You also could just replace it by going to Homeless Depot and buying new, they are relatively inexpensive.
