Anybody figure out how to add a chain counter to the older galley made windlasses??'

Cheaper to paint. I used different colored zip ties at specific depths. We haven’t anchored a lot but most zip ties have been on since 2019.

The only chain counter I ve used was a Maxwell which used a magnet in the chain gypsy and a sensor in the base under the Gypsy.

I wonder if the magnet could be epoxied on the side of the gypsy and install the sensor on deck in some waterproof box.

But yeah… painting is easier.

We were on a friend's boat on the Hudson by the Bear Mountain Bridge. He had a chart of different colors representing the length of rode out at the helm. It was a tricky anchorage and he was out on the bow working things but without success. At one point he yelled back up to the bridge "what color is orange?". We all knew what he meant but he wasn't all that happy about the laughter.
I used a single color of orange every 10 feet. I let all of the chain out on the dock laying it down in a pattern that looped back on itself every ten feet. I had a drop cloth at each end to protect the dock. All it took was two hits with a spray can and a little dry time before I took it all up again.

Funny, I have the same chart with corresponding depths. My wife will ask water color today?

I use white paint, every 25’. One short (about 12”) for 25’ and one long (about 36”) for 100’. No need to remember colors…. 125 is one long one short… 75’ is 3 shorts etc. Really no need to paint every 10’

I painted one link at 25ft, two links at 50 but with a non painted link in between the two so its easy to identify, 3 at 75, four at 100 and then started over with the same pattern. We never have to ask about what color. And we all know when over 100' is out and that the next painted single link is 125 and not 25.
