"galley down"... any photos of modified dinettes that are more comfortable ?

Say on the 1977 to 1989, 53 to 60 Hatteras....any of you modified the dinette to make it a "U" shape or anything ? Original is not terrible of course but not the most comfortable thing in the world either....thinking in terms of spending time there at a laptop, not just eating.

I have a 1979 43' double cabin with a dinette that I am furnishing as a live aboard. The dinette seems to me to be wasted space given the way my wife and I eat (in front of the tv) I intend to either convert the dinette to an office space. I work from home or extend the salon over the dinette

I'm looking for ideas too

Yeah, that's the idea...assuming a 53 to 60 has that much available dinette width.. thanks.

My 48MY had an uncomfortable dinette seat. I had it modified as shown below and we can sit for hours playing cards etc. The key is a combination of seat back angle and good foam.

That's interesting. The 56MY is the same boat sans cockpit. That set up appears to block off all the pantry cupboard along the starboard side, as well as the access hatch below the dinette table that takes you back beyond the stairs to where the washer dryer go. Are those forfeited or is there another trick in play here? Like wise the storage under the benches. We found ours very comfortable and used it a lot.

Also curious as to the elevation of the floor where the pedestal is, that is flush OEM. Here's ours for reference..

there is storage under each of the (now) three pieces of the dinette , access to the "hall way" behind is gotten to by removing the center piece of the dinette that goes fore and aft. The access panel is there. There is also storage beneath the dinette assembly itself. It also does not protrude into the walkway.....and you can look out the window! We like .............Pat

It looks nice but you still can't sit more than 4 there which is the same as OEM. I see no benefit in modifying it.

It looks a lot more modern looking . Good job

While it does look good, from a practical viewpoint OEM is more efficient. The OEM table is larger and since you will still have four seated it will be a bit of a PITA to slide around to the back. As I said, it really looks good, but I am old school and believe form should follow function.

The original dinette also converts to a double bed, giving the ability to sleep 10. The center table leg unbolts at its base and the table (heavy!) comes out of its slot and is placed on the deck. The four cushions are lifted out and rearranged across the seats to form the bed. It's a tight fit, but it is there. I have used it as a double about twice because having someone sleeping there disrupts the usual morning flow for coffee or breakfast.

Our dinette gets a lot of use when we have grandchildren aboard. Eating, coloring, dying Easter eggs. It's easy to clean up and almost indestructible. Great for two for breakfast. The Dustbuster is right there for those toast crumbs.

We have modified the thickness of the cushions to be a bit more comfortable, and covered the original Formica table top with Corian, which is great for this purpose.

We have done the same and it gets used almost everyday for breakfast. Dinner is usually at the salon table, but breakfast is quicker and easier at the dinette with that final cup of coffee on the aft deck every morning.

We never found the dinette very comfortable or practical so removed it and added cabinets and small bar.

I like that a lot. Quick sammich or a place to hang and keep the cook company. Sit down meals on the promenade deck.

Re: "galley down"... any photos of modified dinettes that are more comfortable ?

It never remotely occurred to me to modify the dinette on my 56my. I spent a lot of time using that as a place to do biz and use my laptop.
We had a full desk in the salon, but the space was mostly occupied by a printer and an iMac. I had most of my business stuff on my laptop.
