Hatteras Model
43' DOUBLE CABIN (1970 - 1984)
I have a 1986 Furuno radar (Model FR-803D) that has started acting up. When I switch on the power switch that cycles up the display unit, often times it won't turn on. After clicking it several times OFF and ON it will start and continue through the 3 minute cycle up period. Afterwards I can turn on the rotor and all works OK. Has anyone had this problem? I'm hoping it's just the switch and not some internal boards or circuits. (FYI, the unit has always been used in fresh water so no salt water corossion) Thanks!

Sounds like a primary switch problem. Could be as simple as a loose or corroded wire. Take off the cover and inspect it.

I had a similar problem and it was an easy fix....but this might be a good excuse to upgrade to one of those new units you've been eying...

I just had the power switch on a Furuno 1900 repaired. The power switch was bad. I used Seacoast Marine Electronics in Brentwood, NH. Reasonable price and quick turn around. When I talked to Pete Waterson, he admitted to being a repair junkie and never tried to sell me a new unit. He also repaired a Robertson AP200DL autopilot of the same vintage that had saltwater damage. I both cases, the repairs were successful and I did not have to go through the purchase and installation of costly electronics. Good luck.

Thanks guys for the input ... I'll let you know what happens!

Steve,

Do you have a contact # for Seacoast Marine? I have a Furuno 1830 radar that needs work and everyone here in NJ wants a fortune just to look at it. My only other option is to send it to Furuno in Wa. I ended up replacing it with a new radar plotter combo, but would like to get this one fixed also.

The web site peaked my interest when I searched for a repair place for some older but useful electronics.

thanks steve.

Let me know what you find out here. I too have an 1830 that could use some work.

Jack, I'm interested in what you find also. Mine quit the other day, getting no return. The array is turning and when I turn up the gain I see what looks like a small circle of green in the center but thats it. Charlie Parker who used to work on rader units looked at mine for all the "simple things" and couldn't find anything wrong. You might want to give him a call 1st.732
