Fuel Prices

I'm starting to think about replacing some pick up trucks I've always gone Ford Diesel. In my area Reg gas 3.26 Diesel 4.06 Looking at that plus the aditional cost of a diesel truck I'm starting to think gas makes more sense?

The problem with buying an LRC is finding one that is for sale and hasn't been run hard and put away wet. The folks that bought them really use them. Many were live aboards that spent months or even years moving around with only the most needed maintenance. The ones that I have looked at are expensive and would need lots of work before you could call them "Bristol" condition. I have worked several years on making our 36' Hat as near perfect as I can so now I know what I am looking at. My wife and I would like a series II 42' LRC or a clean 48' LRC, but few are for sale, kinda rough, and way too pricey. They really don't seem to sell that often as the ones for sale have been listed for a long time.

Maynard, you ought to give some consideration to the 48MY too. I feel it is a much more liveable boat than the 48 LRC.

here is some sorta good news. The diesel price here at Ft. Meyers Beach, Moss Marine, actually went down from $4.37 to $4.21. That is still a horrible price, but less so.:)

So, I take the Admiral out to dinner last night and she brings up the topic of our next boat.

She accuses me of not being aggressive enough in the search. I explain the 46-52C's I've looked at have either been dogs or priced like it's still 2003. Many owners remember what the boat appraised for when they refinanced back then, add the money they invested in upgrades and figure that's a fair ask.

She then asks what the 46-50C burns in fuel. I tell her about 2 gallons per mile. At $5/g that's about $10/mile in fuel. She does the math and agrees weekend excusions can't be justified at that price. 'What does a trawler burn in fuel?' I tell her about 2-3 miles per gallon. A trip to Block Island would cost $150-200 in fuel in a trawler, $1000 in a Convertible.

She agrees that a since we are not fisherman- just cruisers, maybe we should forget the C's and seriously look at trawlers. I nodded and added that with current fuel prices, Sportfish are going to be even harder to sell a few years from now.

Hate to say it guys, but it looks like a Grand Banks is in our future.

My neighbor just sold his. I can tell you about the issues they have and what to look out for.

I just threw out the name Grand Banks, Albin is another to consider. Truth is, neither gets me very excited. A 40'-46 NordHavn is the trawler I'd really want but they are still priced a bit high for my budget.

And for some reason Nordhavens are not dropping in price as fuel goes up.

38 gal/hr....2.5 hrs to the Stream, troll, 2.5 hrs back...$4/gal=$900 in fuel for a day of fishing...

Bulls**t on that....

anyone looking for a 45C, give me a shout

Been through the trawler thing. Poor quality, no class (in the less expensive ones) and issues throughtout. My 43 does at trawler speed about the same as most of the trawlers (around 2 gph) Now if I want to get up and go to my max cruise about 13 or 14 it's .6. Go slow it's all you'll do in a trawler and enjoy your boat you'll find much better fuel rates and have time to enjoy the ride. Bill

Greetings from London. I'm overseas on a biz trip and saw a petrol station posting 1.3 BP/l.

Kid Krush:

At current exchange rate of $1=.4335 BP what is the equilivent dollar/gallon price?

$2.998 / liter ... Krush is at nite flight school ! Is this about right? How many liters in a U.S. gallon? I'd guess about 5.5 (?) ws

OK, since Krush is off doing something cool, I'll give him a pass.

3.785 liters/gallon.

$3 x 3.785 = $11.36 per gallon.

More fun with numbers:
To fill your tank with 15 gallons would cost $168 !!!
Guess what? LOTs of people are still driving cars over here.

But you'd be hard pressed to find someone with a Hatteras.

Just returned from a fishing tournament in Eleuthera Bahamas (we won) diesel was $5.49/Gallon.

You should try to meet up with Old Limey ! ws

Bob, since we own a 48 LRC, I am sure you will understand why I disagree with your conclusion on the livability of this model. Everyone has their opinion, thus there are all kinds of boats. The 48 LRC, in my opinion, is the ultimate in livability. My favorite area is the pilot house. Is my pride of ownership too obvious? My observation is that this style boat is one of a very few that are still built new today, and the 48 LRC still looks better that any similar designs. And it is a Hatteras.

I agree that these boats are old enough that the difference between those with stellar maintenance and poor maintenance is very noticeable. We looked for three years for the one we bought, and that was back when I was buying diesel for less than a dollar a gallon. We looked at a lot of trash in our search. My observation was the majority of the good ones change hands privately. And there were few of these. Also, the owners of the neglected LRC's still show their pride when they set the asking price at a ridiculous level.

I was in Tolchester MD, week or so ago... paid $4.40 gal for diesel at the Marina.....

Mike,

Boat US price in Solomons at the Calvert Marina was 3.50 two weekends ago. I was pissed I didn't need more than I did............Pat

Pretty sad when $3.50 gal for diesel appears to be a bargain. I hope somehow some of the new finds of crude oil literally "floods" the market when and if it ever makes it to market.

As we become older we become more cynical about these things and I believe we are all pawns in a hugh chess game. We are permitted to feel good about life by having a decent home, car and yes even a used Hatteras. The greed at the top is incredible. The top 50 execs in America managed to "EARN" well in eccess of a billion dollars last year. While I don't begrudge anyone the right to aquire hugh wealth by working hard etc, I do get PO'd with the obscene prices for oil and/or it's by products since I believe it is absolutely based on greed.

History has shown over and over that when the disparity between the top and the bottom gets over stretched something big happens..... Like the French revoloution (they have no bread to eat so feed them cake) or two of the more recent examples - The rise of National Socialism in Germany during the 30's and the Communist experience starting in the late teens and early 20's of the last century.

With all it's warts etc., our Country has been by far the fairest form of government with the best opportunity for financial and social success EVER in the recorded history of the known world. It will be a shame to see if disintegrate like so many other great civilizations.

Sorry for the rant but boy does it make a person feel better.....
