So, again, I live in a boating desert... Which is funny since the start of the Erie Canal is here, but anyway...

Latest project is replacing my fuel hoses... I preemptively decided that nobody local would have that blue USCG fuel hose, so I went looking online and it turns out that Seaboard Marine has a pretty nice online custom hydraulic hose ordering thing.

I ordered one as a test, and to see how much more flexible new ones might be, etc. It is a pretty nice hose.

Anyway, so trying to measure everything up and not place a $1200 custom fuel hose order in error I ended up going down the rabbit hole a bit about hoses and fittings and stuff, and long story short, everything in my setup is 45 degree (SAE) flare, while my racor fittings are 37 degree (JIC).

Anything you read says you have to match those two, and half of the people you talk to would suggest that they need to match...

But, Seaboard Marine says they are interchangeable (except for a couple instances, -6 for example with different threading) and that the angle doesn't matter.

I wasn't sure about that, and my local hose shop (who doesn't have the marine hose...) agrees that it doesn't matter.

I don't know what to think. I have it in writing from Seaboard that it doesn't matter... but that won't do me any good.

Considering just going to hose barb and ordering some of the right hose and clamping it on?

Any thoughts?

Thanks!

Any hydraulic shop will have USCG rated hoses. Most with MSHA rating are also USCG rated. It's very common.

Well, they didn’t. Nothing USCG rated. Big shop actually, recommended by multiple people. There is another place around, I’ll try them next.

That's unusual in my experience. I think the last time I had them made it was Continental hose. But I've seen it in other brands.

I went with all female flare hoses from Seaboard. I wasn't looking forward to trying to find a local hydraulic shop that had the right hose and honestly, the online ordering with Seaboard was really easy. Luckily I had SAE flare male coming off the original bulkhead mounted filters and made sure I put new SAE male flare fittings on the secondary filters on the engines. I did find my used repower engines had a mix of fittings, so in practice the SAE to JIC angle difference may be inconsequential.

SAE and JIC will tighten down and may not leak.
With the different contact areas because of the different angles, it is not recommended.
Imagine the contact area of mix/match fittings like an ole 10-speed race bike tire on the road, vs a 60 wide tire on the road (skinny or fat dam holding the water or fuel back).

"Now you got it. Anything up to 1000PSI and probably more, in our experience, the mis matched taper almost seals better than the matched tapers.

It actually concentrates the force onto a smaller patch of the metal, making a strong seal. The metal of each side will flex a bit to mate with each other. Creating good seal.

Since there is no real data on these, we typically limit the PSI but Tony has used them in full hydraulic applications 2000+ psi... Anecdotally no issues.

For fuel or gear oil cooler lines, or anything else below 1000 psi. They are fully interchangeable."

I learned my lessons the hard way with high pressure RO (water maker) systems years ago.
Always made sure all was good past that. Not including some Bo-Boos on my own boat to remind me to check what I thought, I knew....
For fuel, most is standard SAE and if you keep it simple (KISS) you should not have any issues.

So I am doing all SAE but the inlet and outlet for the Racors only come JIC, it seems, so that is where the issue is, to me.

The hose shops say that it doesn’t matter.

Do you have an Industrial Hose and Hydraulics around you anywhere. Those people have adapters right on the shelf that should convert for you. Maybe not but you never know. Nobody likes to have stock anymore, Applied Technologies in Ft Lauderdale didn't have a single O ring in stock when I was in.
Walt Hoover

I ordered new fittings from them and there is nothing available except SAE straight thread (7/8-14) with o ring seal to JIC fitting.

Can't find 7/8-14 straight thread with o ring on one side to -10 45 degree SAE flare anywhere.

There may be nothing more annoying than pipe and tube sizing!

Interesting.
Yep, I'm into the catalogues now.
Hose or JIC seems to be the common fittings.
I'm assuming your installing the later 500 filter sets.

There is an Racor option fitting to screw into the new Racor and transition to female NPT.
From there you can keep all SAE.
This may make your installation take up more room.

Keep us up on your final design and how well it works. ☺

I have old 1000MA.

I will update my my new setup..!

My hose shop had SAE and JIC ends in stock so I could customize the hoses as needed to mate to the fittings that I had.

Three places now, like actual hose shops, have said it doesn’t matter.

It is a frustrating thing.

They only have JIC #6 and #12, because they are actually a different size…

My shop said it didn't matter as well. But then they offered to use the SAE fittings on the ends that I needed if I really wanted them.
