  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
58' LRC (1975 - 1981)
Lightening storm killed my KVH HP4 system last weekend in Manteo.
I had the tech out today (yes, Sunday!) and he confirmed my fears.

Haven't had a chance to review my insurance policy yet, but any thoughts on if this is covered (Markel Marine).

Either way, I need a new unit.

Does anyone have any experience with the new HD7 Hi-Def units? If so, would you recommend them? We need tracking capabilities while moving, so I'm probably looking at the M7 or HD7.

Any other models I'm missing?

Thanks.

"act of god" is what I was told when my boat was hit.

I feel your pain. The new equivelent KVH replacement for your hp4 is the m5. this is what I am installing now. the HD7 is nice but BIG bucks. I have heard no problems with the HD7. If you are interested in replacing your dead antenna with a pre owned G4 (same thing) PM vincentc. He has one for sale at a good price. hurry.

Thanks.
Interesting sequence of events has occurred over the last 48 hours. I spent a lot time of yesterday researching replacements, filing the claim, etc. Talked with the tech and also with KVH. I also spent some time on-line looking at models/manuals, etc.

While on-line, I stumbled upon my TracVision 4 Technical Bulletin/Service/Trouble Shooting manual. After spending some time reading, I realized that the main unit has 2 fuses on the circuit board. I also know that the technician didn't open the unit up to check these fuses! When I called him, he said, "yeah, I think that unit has them, but it shouldn't be the fuses based on what the service port data is showing."

Needless to say, I was a little pissed. I'd already filed a claim and was about to submit his report, when I discovered this information. Of course, it may NOT be the fuses and the unit still MAY be fried. BUT, I'd rather replace $2.00 worth of fuses than $6,000 worth of a unit (I don't care if it's coming out of my pocket or my insurance companies, it's a waste!).

So, I'm having my yard electronics guy jump up there tomorrow, take the cover off and check the fuses. <fingers crossed>

As a side note, I spoke with my insurance company and I *am* covered for repair or replacement, based upon the damage. Yes, it would be depreciated value, but I was still happy with the conversation. I also let them know to hold tight on the claim - as I'd rather spend $300 on a service call (out of my pocket) on a service call/fuses - instead of a potential thousands out of their pocket (and mine collectively). They were obviously very appreciative. Seems they would have paid - but I'll save the claims calls for bigger problems.

Once again, a learning curve. Whether the tech made a mistake or was trying to sell me a $6000 unit I didn't need remains to be seen. Either way, I learn something new every day!

Jeff - a little (or a lot) off point but funny nonetheless. For years, when having my pool opened, my pool heater would require a repair each year to get it lighted. Finally, this last year, the fellow who examined the unit said that it would cost $350 to get it lighted. I said go ahead and fix it. He then tells me that he is not interested in doing the work and hits me with a $200 service bill to tell me that he will not repair it. I got so annoyed that the next day, I spent about $6,500 having a solar heater installed just so I would not have to deal with the annoyance each year of service people for my heater. Sure enough, the kids have not been in the pool since but at least I do not have to deal with service people each year. Sort of the flip side of your situation--paid a lot just to avoid the headaches of service. Before I get toasted here--there are many fine and reputable service people in the marine industry. Not so sure about the pool industry up north.

2 fuses blown (one fried the solder around the fuse holder a little bit). Replaced the fuses. Back in business!

I feel like I got sucker punched, but it'll only happen once!

Jeff - now you should take the money you had set aside for a new KVH system and buy the Admiral a mink coat or Rolex. Heck--the money was spent already (at least it would have been in my mind) and the dividends will last forever.
