  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
34' SPORT CRUISER (1961 - 1965)
As some of you know, I'm in the midst of refitting/restoring a 1964 34 Sport Cruiser. Currently, I'm finishing up the steering system. All the old copper has been removed and replaced. The steering pumps seem to be working but to my surprise I found out that I didn't have the Crowell system that I thought it had. They are stamped with "Fluid Controls, Inc." and the steering ram is a Hynautic. The system seems to have been "upgraded" from the original design in a piecemeal fashion as it has a reservoir tank and relief valves.

Does anybody know anything about these steering pumps? Are rebuild kits available? Any thoughts?

Yes,

Call Sams. I ordered my rebuild kit for my 1985 32ft this past Spring. It included everything you needed to rebuild the ram on the Hynautic system. I'm sure they even have other kits for other system components as well.

Good Luck!

Yes, I left a message for Steve earlier today and I hope he can give me some info. I think (could be wrong) that the Fluid Controls were a predecessor to Hynautics.

Is the helm pump a roundish looking cylinder and painted green? If so it is a early Hynautic part. Teleflex bought them out and they are not much help.

Yes, they are a green box with a cylinder attached to the end. I spoke to Steve yesterday. He thinks they were used briefly before Hatteras switched from Crowell to Hynautic. He also told me there is a company who can rebuild them in FL and will send the info. Fortunately, they are working fine for now, but the age concerns me and want to be prepaired if one or both fail.

I'll bet I used that company in Florida last year to rebuild mine. If they are the same folks, it was a small operation but they provided great service and I got the unit back within a few days good as new.
