WRT Charlotte Harbor Boat Storage, we were at Safe Cove over the Summer once. To get to these places one has to transit a lock. Our '85 43 MY JUST made it through the lock. I don't think I'd push it with 16 feet but with the dink on the back it was a tight fit.
Check out the South Gulf Cove Lock. I'd give them a call or the marinas before going through.

South Gulf Cove Boat Lock | Charlotte County, FL (charlottecountyfl.gov)

Definitely would call CHBS, get the latest information regarding the lock and clear passage to their facility. They are open, operating the office out of a temporary trailer BUT make sure you contact Impact Marine with painting inquiries beforehand as he had a backlog of customers. 30 ton is correct as the 52’ was approx 52k the Viking 54k.

Ian gouged my stripe! The worst part of this is I'll be focused on rebuilding my house for the first 6 months and the 52C will have to sit there, with the torn top flappin' in the breeze. I'd hire someone to come buff out the tower while the top is off, but everyone seems booked for years.

Hello all. Well, I have now had to notify my insurance company that they're in violation of Florida state law having failed to make a decision on my claim within 60 days of date of claim. I can't afford an attorney (disabled vet on a fixed income) which they're counting on to continue stalling. Meanwhile friends of ours who were on the Upper Mississippi during Ian completing the loop foudn out they would not be able to renew their insurance in 2023 without moving their boat out of Florida for permanent homeporting, and are putting it up for sale in May this year. Another friend who lost his boat in the marina found out the only way he can get insurance is if his boat is permanently homeported either north of Chesapeake or on the inland waterways such as the Ten-Tom or Mississippi. He showed me the list of insurers he talked to - over 20 companies.

I had a go with an insurance company similar to what you're dealing with, but on a much, much smaller scale, and not weather related. Once I filed a complaint with the state insurance commission, they paid up as if it was their job. Go figure. Anyway, I'm not sure if you've been down that road already, but here's FL's analog for what we have here, and I hope this helps you get some resolution.

Rob sorry to hear about your claim and the insurance company not complying with the law. I would call/email the
The attorney general of the state and see what that does. I know it is frustrating in the extreme but I
Think you will ultimately prevail. Hang in there.

My insurance is up for renewal in May and I am expecting issues. I am an out of state owner who keeps
The boat in florida. Even though it is laid up in a building during hurricane season I am anticipating a fight.
If marinas will allow a liability only policy I would do that. Or I would elect to forgo named storm insurance
But as of yet that is not offered. I hope that all parties (boat owners, marinas, insurance companies)
Will be driven to figure something out because the boating industry and the state of florida stands to
Lose if insurance is not available or so expensive as to be effectively unavailable.

Well, insurance company caved 2 weeks ago but has dragged their feet on paying out. Friends of ours who were on the Great Loop when Ian struck had to renew their boat insurance Oct 1 of 2022, and their broker told them they would not be renewed in 2023 unless the boat was moved north of Chesapeake Bay for hurricane season, and another out-of-state boat owner who lost his boat in Ian was flat refused insurance in Florida for his boat regardless of where he kept it.

It’s not over until you have the check in the bank. We had our house in Vero Beach destroyed in 04 Frances took 18 months before we saw a dime out of the insurance company. The state department of financial affairs set up a mediation and even after that the insurance company defaulted on honoring their agreement. They caved after the State Atorney got involved. The heck of it was the insurance company was Citizens which is owned by the state. Then to add insult to injury the check went to the mortgage company even though it was 10 times what I owed would release the funds until I rebuilt. They made me front the money and submit progress payments it was 4 years before we were back in the house. I hate insurance companies!

Yesterday was probably the worst and best day of our too-short ownership of Pau Hana, our 1986 54' MY. I previously posted in this thread about losing her to Hurricane Ian, and our insurance company was a nightmare. It took reaching out to Governor DeSantis' and the state CFO office to get our claim paid, and Pau Hana's wreckage removed. This was 6 months after the insurer took responsibility for the salvage operation. Well, Friday morning the salvage company was able to partially raise what was left of the hull - Considering the boat was crushed by multiple floating dock sections against a sea wall with the full force of Ian's storm surge, she was still in fairly impressive condition. The salvage company had to regroup and bring a deck barge in because the adjustor gae them the wrong dimensions for the hull - She was a wide-body 18'6" not 15' as they were told. I plan to continue visiting this forum, since while we're probably on a several-year break before trying to get back into boat life, the knowledge shared here is priceless. But thanks everyone for the support, and keep sharing.

Wow. That hurts my eyes.

Sorry thing ended up that way, both for you and the boat.

Damn Rob, hard to get my head around THAT...even after all the Sanibel carnage I've see every day since 9/28.

I'm glad Patronis was some help. He seems pretty good, for a FSU grad.

Final update on Pau Hana. She couldn't be moved by truck so she was cut up on-site in St James City. While I was unable to look for any more belongings, one of the salvage crew found my DeWalt mechanics tool set still in the case and intact - Just needs soaked in diesel fuel and cleaned.

Thanks Tony. Still hoping to meet up sometime for a beer with you, and I'd love to see your boat. Sorry I can't show you Pau Hana, but...

Thanks rob. My 52 looks a little rough with no canvas right now, but it's on the way. I'm running her up to Safe Cove in July to get painted and take the box boxes off, unless they move my job back again. Maybe you should ride along? Now that Summer is coming and the tides are higher, we can take her for a run anytime.

Sorry again about the boat...especially with how hard you worked on her and that all your stuff was on it. I know from my house getting douched that boats and houses can be replaced, but ALL the little stuff lost is simply mind-numbing. Seeing it all rotting in the front yard for a month was torture.

Anyway, call anytime if you wanna exercise the ol' girl.
