Some of the chrome is beginning to flake off on the base of my Galley Maid windlass. The boat has always been in fresh water so guess that's why it has lasted 27 years! Any suggestions on a fix? Was thinking about using a chrome spray paint after some light sanding to prevent any rusting. Thxs.

rechrome. Paint ain't made to do what a layer of metal will do. Just my $0.02.

I don't think you have to worry about rust. It looks like bronze under that chrome doesn't it? I still have my old capstan from before I had the unit rebuilt and mine was peeling too, but no rust.

Sky ... you're right ... it looks brown but must be bronze which obviously won't rust. Thanks!

I would finish to peel it and then would polish the bronze. That would be a classic marine finsh. Beautiful!

Our old Galley maid rope drum winch had lots of peeling chrome. Our boat was also fresh water only. I installed a new unit with new drum and base plate. It also has a chain gypsy, which is why we changed. Two years later the new stuff is also peeling.
