as mentioned in a earlier post a shut off like used in filling stations will work fine. I ran a hydro test shop for years and that is what we used to fill water into the cylinders. You can pick one up cheaply at any farm store or your local supplier that makes hoses and pressure couplings.

Having said that I am in the set a timer group. I usually set it for what a guess will be have the amount needed, then check the gauge. reset once I know the flow rate to just shy of what I figure it will be.

Probably a good idea for the pool too. Not that it will sink the yard but it sure makes you feel dumb when you forget.

Got my auto shutoff nozzle in yesterday, used it, works perfectly. Except I didn't get what they show in the photo, which appears to be of bronze casting with blue vinyl cover. What I actually got was aluminum casting with red cover...probably exactly the same thing as at below link, except with a few fittings to adapt it to a garden hose.

So, if you want to get one, I'd just order the Agri Supply one and some adapter fittings and save $45 over what I paid. I'm using it in conjunction with one of the lightweight retractable hoses and storing the whole deal in a plastic milk crate in one of the aft storage areas.

Besides the fact that you can turn it on and just forget it, the nozzle is nice in that you insert it like you are filling a fuel tank and you know it's not coming out of the hole. Using a timer or whatever you would need to stuff the hose end down deep in the water entry hole and can never be absolutely sure it doesn't work it's way out of the hole in the fill process.

Bottom line is to fill the tank, take the nozzle with the flex hose (that weighs almost nothing) already connected to nozzle, connect other end of hose to dock water, turn on water, insert nozzle in fresh water opening of boat, squeeze trigger to max flow, trigger locked.... and forget it. No checking the fresh water gauge, nothing..just turn on the nozzle and come back later and your tank is full (but not overflowing)
