exhaust riser potential hazards

hi guys, i have a 52'c with 8v92s. i have heard many stories (as well as threads on this forum) regarding leaking exhaust risers destroying engines. However on my boat i dont see how leaking risers can do any damage? The raw water comes into the riser about 8" behind the turbo, and the risers are sloped down toward the back of the boat. Any leak during normal operation will be blown away from the engine as a result of a exhaust, and when at rest, any leak or drip will be pushed away from the engine due to gravity and the downward slope of the riser. what am i missing?

I have the same boat/motors and lost a turbo because of it.....The original risers were jacketed past the elbow. My new ones are "dry" risers which have a hard coated insulation and only jacketed past the elbow

can you send me a pic of the new risers? i just dont get how water can ruin the turbo unless you get a big leak spraying water into the turbo while running.

The riser i have is very similar to this picture. There is a small section which has no contact to the raw water, and separates the turbo.

Thanks thoward. interesting the risers i have on my look very differen't than yours. Mine is almost identical to the picture. the ones you originally had slopped back into the turbo. So any leak would eventually lead into the turbo ruining it. thanks for posting. Your new risers are real nice!

Thoward, Can you tell me where you got your new risers and cost, specifically the elbow I need to replace mine.
