  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
58' LRC (1975 - 1981)
Does anyone know if the exhaust blankets in the attached photos would be the original for these engines? Do they contain asbestos?

They are in overall decent shape except for one side where the cloth is worn out from running against people squeezing by.

Is there a fiberglass tape or other product that can be used to repair the one worn out spot?

Can these be painted to freshen them up?

I'm getting ready to brush down the manifolds and paint them, so it would be nice to get things cleaned up a bit. This is one of 100 or so "clean up" projects in the ER, LOL....

Possible, but unlikely. Believe it or not asbestos insulation wasn’t banned until 1989 despite widespread awareness of its health hazards. By that point the decision was mostly symbolic since almost everyone had already quit using it, with some exceptions where the technology still called for it (brake pads before 1989 being one example). I would be very surprised if a high end yachtbuilder was using it by the 1980’s. That would be unheard of.

I definitely painted mine to make them nice again.

I used high temp paint (mine were silver) but in retrospect since they don't actually get hot, could have used anything.

Yep that’s the A product. Much adu about nothing. Interesting how after the trial lawyers cashed in reports have come out that it’s not really as hazardous as was claimed. FWIW I grew up in Ambler Pennsylvania an asbestos town. We had Certainteed,Keesbey Madison and Nicolet industries that made all kinds of products from insulation to pipe. It routinely snowed asbestos all over the town. When you think about it everyone who stood on a street corner in the 50’s through 90’s was blanketed in a cloud of asbestos from trucks cars busses braking to stop. I went on to work with boilers incinerators and steam systems where we used asbestos all the time for everything from gaskets to steam pipe insulation. I don’t know anyone who has died from asbestosis or lung related problems that wasn’t a multi pack a day smoker. We used to use a product called water glass to encapsulate it so it would hold shape on elbows and odd shapes. The only concern I’d have if you ever sold the boat it could become an issue.

And no they’re not original. Many people replaced the trouble prone water jacketed exhaust with dry stacks wrapped with asbestos. The original owner of our boat had it delivered new to Rybovitch for outfitting. First thing they did was rip off the exhaust and replace it with dry stacks. Still good after 55 years of service.
