Engine won't start!

Ran fine last weekend. Always starts right up, but now just turns over and no go. Checked some of the obvious things within my capability (like fuel, emergency shutdown, transmission, etc). and had the local mechanic take a look too, but he admittedly doesn't have a lot of experience on the DDEC engines.

Any obvious things to check? Is there anything in the ECU that would allow the starter to run, but prevent it from starting. Does it have to be a fuel problem?

Are you sure you are getting fuel? Can you spinoff your secondary fuel filter and make sure it's full. One of my racor' was sucking air and even though I had fuel in it, the fine filter was empty.

I haven't tried that. Is it under pressure at that point or can I spin it off without a problem?

No I haven't. Couldn't get the filter off to check it out. Coming back with a proper tool to get it off tomorrow. Also tried turning it over running the priming pump (someone else's suggestion) to see if we got any life, but no luck there either. Trying to see if it's the fuel pump. Either way, I got a Detroit guy coming out soon (hopefully).

Just got off the phone with Rick Freda from All Island Diesel. He's thinking it could be either (or both) timing sensor and synch reference sensor. The DDEC panel was coming up with a synch reference sensor error.

Where's the best (and quickest) source for these?

Before you go yanking, make sure the sensors don't have to be calibrated or adjusted or something crazy. Pulling it out of the running engine could screw it up. I really DOUBT you have any special procedures, but sometimes sensors of this nature need whiz-bang computers to set up properly.

i'm not at the boat this week, so would have had to pay mechanic to swap the sensor. cheaper just to buy the part. i think he's going to try it today (hopefully).

Just to update the thread... mechanic got the engine started last week without changing any parts. All he did was clean the existing sensor connections and re-primed the fuel. Wish I thought to do that (well, I did prime the fuel)! Anyway -- very pleased it was a quick an inexpensive repair.
