53' EXTENDED DECKHOUSE (1983 - 1988)
Good evening all,

I would very much appreciate recommendations for a Detroit engine surveyor around Norfolk, Newport News/Richmond area or thereabout.

I have researched the forum and found some names but they are either no longer active or moved away. The engines are the real concern here so I am hoping to find someone really knowledgeable with these engines. After what happened to that 58' in Missouri, I am starting with an in-depth engine survey before the marine survey.

I would also appreciate recommendations for a marine surveyor in that area as well.

Thank you all kindly,

Streff

He was going to survey a Detroit boat for me in VA but the deal fell through. He is also active on the Facebook Detroit forum pissing people off by telling them the truth. I have never met him personally but alot of people up there use him from what I hear

I just used a very good detroit surveyor, pm me and I'll pass along his contact information. He travels.

Keep us(especially me) posted on how this goes. I am assuming this is for the 48MY. Bobby Rowe rebuilt the starboard engine. I tried contacting him, but he appears to be retired. I did look at that boat and ordered an Abstract of Title(which I am still waiting for). When I get it, I will let you know if anything doesn't look right.

Thank you all for the recommendations. Quick question if I may, my understanding is that a borescope of some cylinders is a key component, in terms of assessing the cross-hatches, rust, scouring of cyl, oil presence, etc. In fact, several years ago, we walked away from a beautiful vessel based on borescope data. There were other signs as well but not as conclusive as the borescope data. One of the surveyors indicated that a borescope is not needed. He seems experienced and knows these engines, but I fell unsure about not doing a borescope.Thank you againStreff

You might ask Western Branch Diesel; I think they are in Hampton or Newport News. They have been a DD dealer down there for decades.

Thank you Jim.Streff
