  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
41' CONVERTBLE-Series II (1986 - 1991)
I recently purchased a freedom 3000 watt inverter. The only spot I have laid out is in my engine room. I'm going to divorce my genny from the 2 8ds that it shares with the port side main and add a group 27 for the genny alone. In doing this ill remove the isolation switch that sits on the wall between the engine room and the cockpit. I'm not sure if the inverter will work properly with the amount of heat the mains put out. Anyone ever install one in the engine room? I hate to do all this work only to find out its going to shut down because of over temp. I know alot of members own and use the freedom line. Any suggestions?

I've had a new style, three-stage, battery charger in the engine room for ten years. It has handled the heat well enough. I don't know about the inverters though.

I installed my inverter just on the other side of the engine room bulkhead. It is under the bed in my master stateroom. It added maybe 10 inches to the wire run and keeps it out of the ER heat. Not sure if this is a possibility with your interior layout.

Good luck.....

There may be something in the Freedom's documentation about temperature. I know there was for my Magnum, which sits 3 feet from an unshielded 20kw Onan in the generator room, where I have measured temps in excess of 110, however I don't know if that is at all relevant to your unit. Mine will shut down if it gets too hot, but never has. I can read its various temperatures (of the MOSFETs themselves, the transformer, etc,) on the remote.

Or you can try to get an answer out of Xantrex...

Edit: a quick search reveals the Freedom's temp range is up to 140 degrees.

I have had a 2500 in the engine room of my 42c for 8 years. Only once did it shut down because of overheating, Fl summer weather , hot engines and too much inverted load at the same time did it. Its been a great inverter but the 3 stage charger leaves a lot to be desired. The float voltage is too high or the fact that it never turns completely off tends to boil your batteries. I lost a bank of 8 trojan golf batteries, now I put my charger on a timmer when the boat sits for any length of time.

mine is in engine room, right between the hot 671's.
I havent had a problem.
not my first choice for location, it was installed by the PO.
but the location does give it a short run on the DC cables to the bank.

The fact that it has a cooling fan inside indicates that temperature is a concern. Likely, it also has a temperature sensor to shut it down should temps get too high. Like most anything with circuit boards, higher operating temperatures for prolong periods of time result in earlier failures. You should install the inverter in a location cooler than an engine room if possible.
Will

Different type, I have a Prosine 2.0, mounted in the engine room of a 42C and it's borderline in the Bahamas during summer. Has never shut down but have had several overheat warnings.

Its simple if it going to be running in a hot and hostile environment it will decrease its life. Yes engine rooms are hostile ;)

Find a better space there is always options!
