Hatteras Model
36' CONVERTIBLE-Series I (1969 -1977)
I started looking into hard wired cameras and a waterproof monitor for the bridge when it hit me. Why not buy a nice night vision capable camera or two, plug them into a router and download the wireless monitor app for my iPad? Buy a waterproof case for the iPad if necessary and just set it in the bridge when running? Has anyone done something like this perhaps as a baby monitor or an actual engine room monitor?

Check out Panbo.com, they just did a bunch of camera tests. Also check out wireless IP cameras. I'm making an order for a Foscam this week. $85, IR, wireless IP camera, 2 way intercom, tilt, pan via iPad, phone, or any Internet connect device. It will work while away from the dock and no Internet via the local wireless network (obviously you loose the remote capabilities with no Internet connection).

How did the wireless camera work out ?

I'd like to know too.. I ended up buying a googo camera which has its own built in Wifi and an iPad app. Works in a pinch but is no way optimum.

Just retrying to help here. I have had and still have many cameras on boats. As far as the ER cameras go, I have found that none of the cameras with IR setups is sufficient to illuminate an engine room for purposes of monitoring conditions therein. So, you will need to have a light on in the ER for that purpose. If you are looking for a wireless way to rig up the cameras, as use a device that throws the signal from the camera to a receiver located somewhere near a monitor. Most are called video senders. My backup Garmins have video inputs so I sent the ER signal to each, one on the bridge and one in the Pilothouse. Also, my Norhtstar has a video input so I also send some camera outputs to that. This should not be an expensive proposition. No special CCTV cameras needed. I buy most of my stuff from Supercircuits. In addition to this setup, I have a set of four cameras on each boat that I can motor remotely through the Internet. I also have a backup system using an aircard to I can monitor and record video from those four same cameras while underway.

Cool info, thanks.
