Hello, I am new to this Owners Forum and my question regards the longevity of these DD engines?
I understand that this maybe to general of a question but more specifically for a motor yacht or yacht fisherman from 53' to 58'. The engine sizes I have been seeing are the 6-71 naturals and TI's and the 8V92TI's.
I am assuming just for the sake of argument that the prior owners have performed the required maintenance.
I seem to see a lot of Grand Banks 46 - 49's with Cat 3208 TI's all with around 3000 hours now for sale.

Having asked the same question, like so many before me, I will save the regulars some typing and give you what I've learned so far. :)

With proper care, feeding and (not overly strenuous) REGULAR exercise the DD's will last a long, long time. Highest number I heard was 16K for a 8V71N, but I'm sure that's the upper end of the range. Many people report getting motors with 3-4000 hours years ago and they're still running. The turbos themselves, if installed, have shorter life cycles.

But no care or exercise, over propping, bad fuel etc etc and all betts are off.

Thanks Oscarvan!

I guess it goes without saying that a good engine survey should be done.

I have just started looking for a cruising power boat to retire and live on full time with my wife.

We have owned a number of sailboats over the last 30 years and now it is time for a power boat. We cruised a lot and most of the time we had to motor. I loved maintaining my engines and really enjoyed having twin screws on our catamaran. I became a "stink potter" and proud of it too.

I find that Hatteras's offer the best quality and value for the money! I have bought older boats and even a new 42' catamaran and without a doubt, I prefer an older boat that has been well maintained and outfitted. I am very impressed to see what Hatteras owners have done with their boats over the years. You don't see that to often in boats that are 25, 35 and 40 years old! They are worth it.

They hold timeless beauty! Love these boats.
