Dyson Vacuum cleaner Test

About a week ago, the Admiral informed me that she had ordered a Dyson Motorhead" vacuum cleaner for the boat. I did one of my eye-rolling things and muttered something about a waste of money. Yeah, we won't say any more about the 700 bucks worth of injectors we didn't need..Oh, I guess I just did, didn't I? But I digress.

The thing showed up yesterday afternoon. You know how every once in a while you try some product and say something like, "Dang, THIS thing is really cool!" Well, THIS thing is really cool. We have three - count 'em, 3, "normal" vacs on the boat plus two of the little hand helds and I swear this Dyson will replace them all. It SERIOUSLY will clean a rug and yet it can also be a small hand-held for little jobs. The darned thing made me want to rush out, get some dirt, and throw it on the floor/rug like the old vacuum adds use to show!

The limitation is, of course, the fact that it is battery powered and around 25 minutes of constant operation is the battery exhaust time. But unlike a normal cord vac that you pretty much have running the whole time, you don't really need to do that. You just pull the trigger as you need vacuum so I found that I was able to vac all the floors, including the back deck and it was still going strong.

The thing isn't cheap but it's very small and convenient/easy to use and no cords hanging around. It's NOT suitable as a shop-vac substitute because it can't handle moisture and it's has a very small dirt capacity - basically it has to be emptied after each major use. But for normal "domestic" boat cleaning, I think it's great!

Thanks for the review. My wife was looking at the very same vaccum cleaner for our boat. Last weekend we borrowed my mother-in-laws dyson to clean the boat, and I too was very impressed on how well it did. My wife was even able to use it in the helm area on a hard suface.

We've had one for the boat and one for the condo for several years. Removed the central vac as Dyson is amazing. Mr. Dyson is the Edison of our age.

My wife gave me one of those units for the boat for my birthday. I guess that's kinda like buying an iron for your wife on your anniversary but honestly I love it. I had a canister vac on the boat and I used that as the Dyson was charging. After it charged I did the carpets again and that little motor picked up a lot more sand and dirt out of the carpet I had just vacuumed with the canister vac. I highly recommend it.

Dammit! I had been thinking that I should get one of these after seeing it on tv (QVC I think) and that it would be great for the boat. Now I guess I have to go ahead and spring for it. Expensive little critter but I curse the corded vac every single time that I have to deploy it.

Mike, I totally agree. We have one on the boat and love it. We did have an issue with the first battery and the customer service was incredible. They sent a new one overnight, with a preprinted call tag. I dropped the bad one in the box and gave it to the marina office for pick up. Done. Works great.

But you do need to see someone about your germaphobic OCD disorder! :-0

We have a DC44 and it is awesome. I figured it would be since we have two regular Dysons that have out lasted and performed anything before they came along.

The DC44 can easily clean the entire 58YF on a single charge and still have juice left.

Mike - I picked one up a few years ago. Now, that you splurged on the most expensive vacuum possible, now go wire up a plug in the VIP closet and install the recharger kit in there so you have it charged all the time and ready for action. It takes the experience to a whole new level!

Doooh, that's why I hate this site sometimes. Amazon Prime has the DC44 for $229 refurbished by Dyson. We'll see just how good that one is when in comes Friday.

Our boat came with two central vac systems and miles of hosing and heads. That got old real fast, so we bought an inexpensive, maybe $40-50 Bissel, stick vac. We had wall to wall Berber carpet throughout the boat, other than the galley, and a big square of indoor/out door on the aft deck. We would occasionally look at Dysons, but even Ann said, gee I think our vacuum does just fine. She did eventually get one of those Shark steam mops which was great in the galley and the heads.

As of today, that is exactly where it is mounted - I just finished adding the wall socket inside the closet for the charger! I don't know what to do with all the extra room in that closet now that the Miele vac/accessories are no longer there!
