Hello,

I have a 53MY and am wondering about the two drain holes (ports) located to the sides of the steering helm on the flybridge (on the floor). They are approx 3/4 of an inch in diameter and I am wondering...do those drain ports only exist to allow water to flow from the floor of flybridge (roof over salon) under the helm & seating to then be re-directed out of the drains on the outside of the fly helm housing or....do those drain holes actually feed into some kind of piping or channeling that must be located in the roof above the salon? If that is the case, where does this actually drain out...I have poured water into these little drain holes and can't see it coming out anywhere. I have looked in them with light and put my finger into the drain holes and detect a hole inside of each of them....my concern being that the holes (inside the drain port) don't go anywhere and thus any water going through these little drain ports is getting inside the roof. As I'm re-reading this I'm thinking that this isn't a very good description of what I'm talking about but hopefully someone out there has the same little ports and knows if they are supposed to flow down, into or through the roof of the main salon, or if they are supposed to just act as ports allowing the water to pass through the housing on top of the flybridge and continue out across the top of the roof. Any help appreciated.

I have two drains on my 1969 53MY, One star / Port. Open the hatches under the bridge. On mine, I noticed that they are plumb straight to the outside of the flybridge. From fthere, water is on it's way. Previous owner, I believed used 3/8 copper tubing... This was a mess. As water would pass, it would leave a stain on the salon roof. I replaced the copper tubing with pex tubing and a little 5200. Works well.. No water or stain.

Hey there,

so you are saying that those little drain ports simply allow water to pass from the floor of the flybridge area, under the helm / seating area, and then be channeled off the boat via the opening on outside of flybridge shell? In other words, the water doesn't go through those ports and then flow down into some kind of piping to be directed elsewhere? I definitely have holes inside these little ports where the water currently flows straight down into somewhere but I know not where. I was going to fill in these holes (not the drain ports themselves) with resin & filler such that the water would only go through the port and travel across the rooftop from inside of flybridge to outside of flybridge. Only issue would be based on curvature of roof that I'll likely have some pooling of water during big rains. I just don't want to fill in something with resin that isn't supposed to be filled in.

Right. the pex tubing is about 2 feet, right out the side!

got it....do you (or does anyone) know if the boat was originally designed to flow into some kind of tubing that actually goes down into the roof of the salon and hooks into some other drain network?

The holes in the upper helm should have tubes which direct the water to the outlets on both sides of the upperhelm shell which lead directly overboard. If you just allow the water to go thru the holes and let gravity direct the water there is a good chance it will work its way to any holes that allows it out. If you dont have a perfect seal where the upper helm shell bolts to the cabin roof the water will penetrate the roof which is hollow and then will work its way out anywhere it can which many times the lights.
