  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
50' MOTOR YACHT (1964 - 1968)
On out '69 MY50 the three salon doors all appear to have had some type of additional door on the inside of the salon (shallow cut outs/notches for hinges), did Hatteras put screen doors on the inside? If so, does anyone have information and/or pictures of these? Thanks

Hatteras did not put screens on any of the doors of these boats. My Dad casually mentioned to the foreman at the Richard Bertram yard in Miami (from whom Fanfare was purchased and where she was stored) that it would be nice to have aft screen doors. A few months later he got a bill for $800 and about had a stroke as this was almost 1% of the cost of the new boat. They are beautifully constructed and varnished to match the interior of the boat. I guess that, if amortized over 51 years, the cost was not so bad.

Since it is blowing over 30 kts today we have all the outer doors closed. Normally at this time of year we have everything open and the AC off. If just a bit windy closing just the screen doors cuts the breeze about in half. We have never had screens on the side doors. These would have to open inwards and there is no swing room for them due to furniture. At home we have one of those roll-up screens but these take up too much room and don't stow well. Here they would have to be inside and would not only make the doorway too narrow but would look intrusive. They also need constant lubrication and cleaning of their tracks.

If you do get aft screen doors I would recommend modern black fiberglass screening material over copper as the copper becomes brittle. The fiberglass also stands up to normal abuse better.

I have seen 53's with retractable screen door on the side PH doors. They're pretty slick. Don't know the source however.

Eric, that is my thought process, I work in the marine industry and am on a lot on boats, especially yachts. I have seen these retractable screens, they are not very bulky and attach along the door on one side' so that is the direction I think I am going to go, just have to find a source. Thanks

My 48MY has a roll up screen that is like a window shade. I've had it for ten years and never had to lubricate anything. The side tracks do take up a little of the opening, but they are easily removed if a piece of furniture needed to be brought aboard. Mine came from a vender at a flea market in Pig Pine. Quite inexpensive as I recall.
