Liquid crystal polymers, and also the related anisotropic melt polymers are the answers I was looking for. The best known example is Kevlar(R). Kevlar(R) shrinks when heated and expands when cooled. The CLTE is -2.2-2.7**10-6/degreeF. I didn't find data, but suspect the high strength, highly oriented UHMWPE fibers like Deema also have a negative CLTE. The value for carbon fiber is -0.2**10-6/degreeF so it sort of fits here, but just barely. Since Scott was thinking of a carbon fiber composite we'll stretch and buy him a beer.

Anybody want to go for polymer science 102?

I guess that was your area of expertise. I always thought Kevlar was a carbon fiber fabric but now I know it's related but different. I need to get that web address for google.

Kevlar(R) is a nylon fiber, but a very special one. Poly (p-phenylene terathalamide). Carbon fiber of course is a special form of graphite.

search CLTE for general info, go to DuPont for Kevlar(R).

Do I remember correctly that kevlar has been integrated into carbon fiber to toughen a laminate and make it more resistant?
 
If you mean Kevalr(R) and carbon fibers woven together, I'm not sure. There are composites around that use both fibers separately in the form of multilayer reinforcements.
 
I remember it being stated as a composite of kevlar and carbon fiber. I think they referred to the kevlars ability to stop a bullet and the light weight of CF.
 
Wow... the forum has gone goofy over the winter! The simple answer to the original question may be that the oil is a liquid in a big oil pan on a boat. IT ROLLS, so the oil is moved around and shows up higher than when the dipstick is cleaned and checked without subjecting it to more rolling action. Did'ja ever chenk your oil in a car on a hill? Even in calm water, just getting on and off the boat makes it roll enough to affect liquids.

Ingredients:
1.) 532.35 cm3 gluten
2.) 4.9 cm3 NaHCO3
3.) 4.9 cm3 refined halite
4.) 236.6 cm3 partially hydrogenated tallow triglyceride
5.) 177.45 cm3 crystalline C12H22O11
6.) 177.45 cm3 unrefined C12H22O11
7.) 4.9 cm3 methyl ether of protocatechuic aldehyde
8.) Two calcium carbonate-encapsulated avian albumen-coated protein
9.) 473.2 cm3 theobroma cacao
10.) 236.6 cm3 de-encapsulated legume meats (sieve size #10)

To a 2-L jacketed round reactor vessel (reactor #1) with an overall heat
transfer coefficient of about 100 Btu/F-ft2-hr, add ingredients one, two
and three with constant agitation. In a second 2-L reactor vessel with a
radial flow impeller operating at 100 rpm, add ingredients four, five, six,
and seven until the mixture is homogenous. To reactor #2, add ingredient
eight, followed by three equal volumes of the homogenous mixture in reactor
#1. Additionally, add ingredient nine and ten slowly, with constant
agitation. Care must be taken at this point in the reaction to control any
temperature rise that may be the result of an exothermic reaction.

Using a screw extrude attached to a #4 nodulizer, place the mixture
piece-meal on a 316SS sheet (300 x 600 mm). Heat in a 460K oven for a
period of time that is in agreement with Frank & Johnston's first order
rate expression (see JACOS, 21, 55), or until golden brown. Once the
reaction is complete, place the sheet on a 25C heat-transfer table,
allowing the product to come to equilibrium.
