Hi All,

I was searching the Internet trying to find out about different diesel fuel types and came across this Wikipedia article. I thought it was a good read and worth posting.

I found it very informative and well written.

I read that at one time, Rudolph Diesel had considered using hemp oil as fuel for his engine but the oil barons at the time, quashed the plan.

Wouldn't all that diesel exhaust have made rush hour traffic jams a happy experience?

Yeah but if that was the case there would be fast food restaurants every 100 feet......

On another note and because this is somewhat related, I did not want to create another post for this question:

Here is a prime example of TMI.. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fuel_oil
still looking for the answer of what type of fuel should be used on my 8V71TI's. This article is confusing to me and although I have the owners manual, I don't think it's a complete one. I can't find any information about fuel type usage in the owners manual.

So being the self admitted newbie I ask if anyone knows the type/grade fuel that should be used for these engines. I guess I could just jump in the car and ask at my local Marina, but I would rather hear it from a Hatteras owner.

Thank you

The marina will have one choice. The main factor is it be clean .

Thanks Fred I appreciate it.

The service manual has more than you will want to read on fuel and oil specifications. The easy answer is you get your choice of ULSD or ULSD. Red is "off road"(no highway tax), green is highway use(paid taxes).

In the old days when we had a choice of #1 or #2 diesel, I think it was suggested they be run on #1 which was more refined.

However, we had a contact at the local airport and used to run a 6-71 powered Sea Scout boat on JP5 jet fuel which is close to kerosene. That was in the 60s.

#1 is very close to Kerosene and was considered a winter fuel. Jet fuel, Kero and #1 are all fairly similar and will eat your fuel system alive.

Back to the question, as said before you'll have one choice. I can't stress the need for an additive enough. #2 ULSD is not much better than the above fuels for lubrication.

What about furnace oil?
I was told that it is the same as diesel fuel.
Can it in fact be used in a diesel without damage to the engine?

#2 is #2. The difference is in handling and additives (oh yeah, and taxes). #2 intended for use in engines has to meet a certain lubricity standard and requires additives (blended in by the fuel vendor) to meet those standards. The U.S. standard is significantly lower than the european standard so in addition to what the fuel supplier adds to meet the base standard it's still recommended to use a supplemental additive. #2 for heating purposes tend to be less clean, and no lubricity additives. If you can get it clean enough with your own filtration and put enough additive in it for adequate lubricity then have at it.

Well if you can get it free/cheap vs $4 a gallon and run a detroit....the possibility of a set of injectors down the road is likely offset by the savings in fuel costs :)

Hi All,

Thanks to everyone for the your insight, guidance, and experience. I waited until today to say thanks because I was somewhat premature originally and wanted to thank all who answered.
