"I can vouch for the two-stage filtration system from Seaboard Marine (Tony Athens). "

Me too!!! ;) (though I'm currently using Baldwin filters of the same rating as the Fleetguard)

One of my friends who runs charters out of Hatteras Island uses Baldwins. They work great. I think that is what I have on one engine right now, actually. FWIW, everything I have ever bought from Tony Athens' group has worked perfectly the first time out, and continued to do so. I just wish he made parts for GT40s....

Does anyone know the approximate cost of the Tony Ahrens filters for a 6V92? I already have the priming pumps.

Here's the product list. You can e-mail him and he will eventually get back to you with advice. Better yet send him pictures of your current set up and he will discuss options for you. The "double double" is the top end.

The dual-head setup takes a bulk separator and then a FS1000 "stratopore" filter - that's what I put on Gigabite. After doing it I don't see why anyone puts up with the RACOR systems any longer - they were ok at the time and did the job, but there's simply no comparison against the newer technology in terms of filtration quality and ease of service.

The "outboard primer bulb" thing he's got on there is a cute trick but that clear hose is going to freak out surveyors. I liked the setup I put in place with the Walbro pump instead in that it was all USCG fuel-rated plumbing and kept the surveyor and USCG folks happy in addition to working really well.

(Note fuel-rated pipe compound and NOT teflon tape on those joints!)

And here's essentially the same setup on a (our) 53MY - inspired to remove my Racors by Karl's original post and pic(s) of a few years back. Same Walbro primer pump at the far right.

If you already have dual Racors, I can't see changing them, especially on a DD that doesn't require the filtration that the newer engines need. The Racors work just fine and I like the clear bowls. The total area of the filter media is much larger as well. That Fleetguard system is a waste of $ IMO.

clear the decks and duck...lol....I'm with sky on this one....

I can't argue re the filtering itself; I readily admit that I have no idea if it's a "better" filter for the DDs or not.

The reason I switched to it was the smaller, easier to mount out-of-the-way setup as opposed to the Racors and the fact that it is easier to service. On our 53 the Racor was an obstruction to getting into the eng room and I hated the placement. When this system came out, it was an immediate "AHA!" for me.

Unrelated to the filter system itself - IMO priming pumps are one of the best additions to a fuel system you can make. They save a lot of time - especially valuable if you have to do system work under way. Also with a DD and some minor additional plumbing, they can polish fuel as well.

This added later - here's a pic of the layout of my racor before I switched to the Fleetguard sys. Now there is no "obstruction" to eng room. I also removed the oem manual pump and replaced it with a bulkhead mounted "gusher" which also does not intrude into the walk-in part of the eng rooms. The plate to which the racor is mounted was also removed.
