Thought I'd post this since battery info is generally useful...

In 2010 I replaced the failing Deka 819's with Deka 8V195s. There's a bunch of info re 819 vs 895s on other posts. I went to the 195s based on a local battery shop's recommendations. They suggested that although they had both batts available, the 195s would do the job and were smaller and less expensive. The previous set of 819's lasted 5-6 years as did the set of 819's before that. The original OEM Rolls/Surettes that came with the boat lasted 15 years.

Today I discovered that two of the 195's now have a bad cell and most of the cells on all batts test on the very low side of "good" using a specific gravity tester. A few cells were below that level. SO, next season it will be time for a new set of Batts.

The (finally!) point of this post is to say that the 195s lasted 6 years, about the same as the 819's did. To be fair, the 195's have always been charged by the very smart Outback inverter/charger. The previous set of 819s were charged for the last half their life with the OB, the first half with the OEM Ferrocharger. All batts prior to that were charged with the ferro. The PO had installed a timer on the Ferro to avoid overcharging - it ran for approximately 12 hours/day. I never adjusted/changed that setting.

I know that the 819s are a heavier duty batt that would seem better for inverter loads but we had no issues at all with the 195s in that role for approximately the same period of time. If we can afford to spring for Rolls, I'll put those in but I'm not optimistic that will happen when the time comes... ;)

Another item worth noting is that the 195s were always operated as a single, large bank, charged by the OB. That may make a difference in the longevity of the 195s. IOW, operated per the OEM dual banks, there would have been a much greater load on the 4 house batts and they might not have lasted as long as 819s. The combined bank never dropped below approx 75% charge in use on the hook overnight. Obviously if that same load had been applied to 4 batts instead of 8, the discharge level would have been more than double that so I suspect that a house bank of 4 8V195s would not have lasted very long.

Mike, when your ready call Rae's Battery in CT. I bought the Rolls last spring and paid just shy of $400 each.

That sounds like a really good price, thanks!

Mike, I wonder if your recent full discharge ended their life early.

Certainly possible, I guess. I hadn't done any Spec Gravity checks in quite a long time. I should have been doing spec grav checks every time I added water but I didn't. That would have shown me whether I was getting a slow, "normal" degrade or whether the recent discharge was a major factor. So...shame on me for not doing periodic checks! :(

AND shame on anybody else who isn't doing it! :)

Guilty as well, but even if I was doing it theres nothing I could change right?

A question.

Why did the inverter not shut down when the batteries reached 60%?

It should not run them down to the lower limits.
