MSN NEWS ...WASHINGTON - A B-52 bomber was mistakenly armed with six nuclear warheads and flown for more than three hours across several states last week, prompting an Air Force investigation and the firing of one commander, Pentagon officials said Wednesday.

Rep. Ike Skelton, chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, called the mishandling of the weapons “deeply disturbing” and said the committee would press the military for details. Rep. Edward J. Markey, a senior member of the Homeland Security committee, said it was “absolutely inexcusable.”

****What the heck are they talking about ? If you can't trust your own Air Force then who can you trust???****

Maybe it's propaganda to have a scare in that area? did Castro die?
Wait wait I got it they where supposed to fly over Mexico or Canada or better yet they where supposed to transport them over the road???

Or they where supposed to Teleport them magicly?
I'm just saying at some point they need to be transported to be destroyed or just moved to a location and it has to happen some how and how is flying more dangerous than driving?

I am astonished and horrified. How is it that nuclear weapons are so readily accessable that one commander can order them loaded and flown? Doesn't this take numerous approvals through a chain of command? Aren't there established prerequisites and procedures specifiying under what conditions a weapon can be requisitioned, moved, or loaded? How is this kind of access within a base possible? If it can happen in the USA...what about other countries......and the US is so bellacose with other countries about their "lax" security procedures...

...crew in trouble for forgetting to drop them on Iran and Pakistan tribal areas.

Come on, you military guys know that it's just a "tactical error". Nothing to get all bent out of shape about.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm...

This base commander should have taken a course in proper media/political information release. Then his statement would have been something like this.
'This was only a training exercise, no live weapons were used. The loading and transport of nuclear weapons demands that involved personnel be well trained and continually evaluated. Similar training excercises have been and will be ongoing to ensure that the United States is protected by a safe, accurate and lethal military.'
It don't matter if you're holding an ace, as long as they think you're holding an ace.

Moving them around the base is OK. Loading the weapons on the aircraft is OK. Mounting the warheads on the delivery package is OK. Afterall, training is necessary, accomplished repeatedly and easily within one Commander's authority to do so, and accomplished often around the globe by several branches of service.
It takes several levels of authority to relocate nuclear warheads. It requires Presidentail authority to launch one. It is contrary to treaties the US is party to - to relocate warheads in an aircraft. Not OK. Big no-no to actually fly warheads to another location. Big goof-up the air crew was unaware - big no-no. I hope senior leaders accept the responsibility as they should, NOT like Ahbrab Graih (sp) mistreatment in Iraq.

Flown from Minot to Blarksdale; Barksdale is staging base for ops to Middle East; nukes for Iran? Perhaps the news report is a whistleblower in the military hoping to prevent another disaster from the "war president"? Whatever, it is, indeed "deeply disturbing".

During the cold war, didn't we have live nukes flying around in B-52's 24/7?

I believe the greatest risk was if the aircraft were to crash, there may be a "leak" or radio active material, but no risk of detonation.

Aren't there codes that need to be entered in order to arm a live warhead?

How does this "incident" differ from our boomer subs cruising all over, loaded to the gills with nukes?

I heard the bombs were being flown form one base to another for decomissioning, not firing. If true, that's fine.
Still, were the detonators mounted on the devices during the flight? They shouldn't have been.

You guys watch to many movies... This guy almost went AWOL with our nukes... GEEZ are you guys nuts? This guy should be in tribunal for TREASON!

So many people just overlook anything to do with Treason... I can't believe it...

WOW

Ever thought what that one man could of ordered? States? Countries? WOW

1) "A B-52 bomber was mistakenly armed with six nuclear warheads" - You don't "mistakenly armed 6 nukes and put them on a plane

2) "flown for more than three hours across several states" - Training? On what? Our own people?

3) "called the mishandling of the weapons “deeply disturbing”" - "mishandling" = took over control of and "deeply disturbing" means he was scared out of his mind by this because this guy could of dropped them ANYWHERE!!!!

4) "senior member of the Homeland Security committee, said it was “absolutely inexcusable.” " - I bet they are upset THEY KNEW NOTHING ABOUT IT!!! They to scared to death!

I can't believe NO ONE CALLED FOR HIS HEAD!!!

You gotta be kidding me this is how easy it is for some rouge agent to DESTROY US!?!?!? And our gov isn't a little upset? Our people are not a little upset? You gotta be kidding me! I DEMAND a complete investigation! From the TOP down!

24 is not a reality show. Calm down. I don't like nukes but they are a fact of life and we need our military to be able to keep them safe. Cutting the balls off the guy who either followed directions or mis read them will not stop nukes from traveling. They need to be moved from time to time. Like on Subs, Airplanes and ships.

This seems to be another press screwup over a relatively minor incident. hell less people were harmed that when Martha Stewart screwed with the stock market. Put it in perspective.

Remember to stand behind the people in our military as they have sacrificed a lot. Do not put any trust in the politicians though as they do not sacrifice they run for office for their own agenda.

HAHA, do you guys even know how many thousands of nuclear weapons we have?

Contrary to what ya'll think, they just don't "explode" even if dropped out of a b52 on accident.

Spend the effort bitching and moaning about something that matters, like the fact that Wallstreet may get "helped" along by your friendly fed or the abundance of wasteful subsidies our fed gov likes to hand out lol farmers, etc

I thought school started in September but I support our president who some blame for every thing that has happened in this country sense the 911 attack. Like most people where I come from I was a democrat until I made more than the minimum wage now I know better. I dont agree with all he has done but at least he sticks with things he starts. I dont think we have alot of atomic bombs now like when I was in the service because we have rockets. I dont think anybody thinks you can drop a bomb by accident where it will blow up. that doesnt even happen in the movies.

i grew up in orlando fl where I still am. Our family home was in the flight path for McCoy AFB nka Orlando International. (if you have ever flown here you will note your ticket says MCO instead of OIA. anyhow in the 60's and early 70's McCoy was a SAC base. The 52's, U2's, AWAX, and fighters flew over constantly and yes the 52's had live warheads on board.

Flyover with warheads is not the issue, the issue is that the weapons got away without the right people knowing about it. How easy would it be for the ragheads to steal them with this type of poor inventory and security control. Most people know they wont go off without detonators however there can be radiation leaks that wont do anyone much good.

Krush, what would be your choice. have the fed bail out the dumbass financial institutions or have our economy collapse. Fed has bailed out financial instituions in the past, you can research the savings an loan problem from the 80's. Ask anyone in Texas about S&L's and look up Lincoln Savings and Loan.

Most people don't even know that in our nuclear weapons history we've had six "Broken Arrows" or lost nuclear weapons, and that's just ours. Nobody's too worried about them, but we're concerned about a few taking a joyride while in the control of the U.S. military.

While it is a mistake that needs to be addressed, I would spend more energy worrying about who's handling them in North Korea, or worse yet Iran.

As I see it, the biggest problem here is that politicians are involved.
I've met and talked with many over the years. Of all that I have spoken with, I have met few who had enough brains to find their own butt with both hands. They all, however, are very good at pointing fingers and telling you what you want to hear whether it be the truth or not.

I'm not buying the whole story ? somthing is up or they are sending a signal?
Why is it that in Iraq they are useing the newest Russian shape charge grenades on the humvees now? how did they get them ? We spent Billons on a new deep vee truck for the millitary for Iraq and now they come up with thies new grenades???

Oh c'mon guys, how do you think they move these things around from one place to another?

Second, without detonators installed and armed, they won't go off. Even if dropped. Nor will they "leak". The cores are VERY well-protected.

You drop one without being armed it just makes a hole where it plays "lawn dart." No explosion.

A bit of sabre-rattling? I suspect so. Maybe a reminder to Iran......

I find it hard to believe that a single commander was the only one involved. It sounds like the Abu Ghraib prison fiasco all over again. The only difference is they figured out that they probably couldn't get away with blaming some lowly airman or maybe a sargent.
I also agree that this would have blown over if the press hadn't given the politicians a chance to grab some headlines. Politicians and diapers should both be changed frequently and for the same reason.
Just my opinion, Fred
