Does anyone have a solution for replacing the small oval screens on the original deck drains on the 53MY/58YF? Sam's Marine offers the complete chrome deck drain assembly (~$260 each) but I only need the replacement screens. The aft part of the drains are actually under the wing door frames, so I couldn't imagine having to remove the door frames to get at the drains. After cleaning /unclogging the seachests a couple of times, I started using some scrap window screen but the mesh is too small and it corrodes quickly. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thank you in advance.

Happy Holidays,
Byron

When mine plug up, I can usually just blow 'em out with the spray nozzle on the hose.

I will admit that these deck drains are one item on a short list of things Hatt could have done better...

They look pretty much like the same sieve arrangement that are used on some laundry/shower drains. The ones for laundry/showers, are replaceable (and round instead of oval). It might be possible to take one of them and cut it to shape to fit the drain.

Even if you get the original deck drain screens, they have 1/4" holes and those clog up with just cottonwood fluff, etc. and the deck floods up to the wing door bottoms. I cut half of each drain screen off so they wouldn't get clogged but still wouldn't pass anything big enough to clog the seachest. Of course, the seachest could still clog up from accumulated small stuff, but so far I'm happy with it. I'd recommend making these half drain screens out of plain stainless steel plate, drilled with 1/4" holes for the lower half and nothing for the higher side half. You could make them out of plastic, but it seems a Hatteras deserves more.

My ED has round drains just aft of the pilothouse doors that go into the ER seachest. They clog occasionally, but that is usually remedied with the water hose. The holes in the top plate are about 1/2" if that helps you to make a decision as to size.

Replaced the screens on our 58YF with aluminum expanded metal from old screen door guard has larger holes than screen and easy work with. Kent

Great ideas gentlemen! I really needed some other opinions on this because I had run out of ideas of my own. Surely one of them will work fine for me. THANK YOU and HAPPY HOLIDAYS!!!
