Rick,

A mechanic at the marina told me he never worries about no-load WOT because it has nothing to do with "real" operation. He just props the boat to get the right RPM. I started to ask him a couple of questions but the "smart" part of my brain, which frequently goes missing, engaged and I just said, "That's good information, thanks!"

Yep, not one mechanic I've discussed my full load not making 2300 mentioned it...just re-prop. Ya gotta think that a 20-year-old spring may start to go a little soft...our instructor (prob 30+ yrs as a tech) always carried shims in his pocket and would use a quarter if he forgot them...1 quarter=50 rpm

Beware that ANY change in the noload speed requires a check of the governor gap and, if its out of spec, you MUST do a full tuneup as changing that will change EVERYTHING ELSE.

Read the book.....

Yeah, I was suprised a change in a gap that's only .006 could make such a difference, and a full tune up done when most anything is adjusted.

Karl, did Gigabite have spring racks?

Yep. '85 model, most (if not all) TAs have spring racks. And - no airdoors. The consequence of that is that you had BETTER pay attention to blower and turbo oil seal condition - a fuel fed runaway can be stopped by cutting off the fuel at the manifold in the cockpit but an oil-fed one is deadly without a way to shut the air off.

If you think I'm reaching over a screaming engine to try to stuff something down the outboard air intake.... uhhhhh, no I'm not!

I've never personally had a Detroit try to go polar on me but I've been a few hundred feet away from one that did. You don't forget that sound.
