Davit Standpipe Question.

My standpipe snapped right in the middle when my marquipt davit motor decided to spool out as I was lowering the Novurania into the water. The davit stopped one foot above the water but the force of the quick stop snapped my standpipe into two pieces and ripped the top of the davit pipe out of the roof.

I had a local machine shop take a once inch thick pipe and weld flanges onto to it. I then had it bolted into the roof with two flanges and into the floor with another flange. I had the roof reglassed from the hole it made. It shouldn't break ever again. Mine is electric so I can't tell you how a hydraulic one would work.

Was it a single ply standpipe?

I had the original standpipe that came with my 1973MY, with the standard Electric motor. I wanted to have a faster and larger tender with steering controls, and a 30hp 4-stroke Engine. (Mercury Amanzi) I tried to lift this new boat with the standard standpipe, and it bent over but did not break. No damage to the base. I had a local machine shop weld in baffles, along with welding on an additional exterior support. Second try had similar results, but actually broke in half. Same machine shop build me a brand new structure, with additional bracing and thicker aluminum. You can see it in my attached picture.
That upgrade allowed me to get my new heavier tender launched without any issues. I joked that this was heavy duty enough that I could lift my entire Hatteras out of the water if needed.

We used this set-up for a year until it was becoming almost impossible to pull the tender back into the boat once it was raised because of the weight of the heavier boat. The next season I had our shop add bearings to the bottom of the base so it would easier to pull in, and of course now with the added bearings it was too loose and the boom kept spinning back around towards from the bow of the boat, making retrieving the tender still somewhat of a hassle.

Since we use our tender often, this was still a chit-show for reasons mentioned...which led me to deep six the entire boom and davits, and add a hydraulic lift from Florida Bow-thrusters to where the current swim platform is located. The added bonus was the additional seating space that was now available on the flybridge, where I extend the back sunbrella dodger.

The added bonus was that I could add a new 13" Zodiac with a 50hp 4-strock, which has been a really fun addition.

Good luck

Well as long as we're talking chit-shows... I sheepishly admit my #1,000 Quick Lift set-up properly passed its proof test last year. Someone lowered my 13' Novo w/50 HP Yamaha (about #800-850 all loaded up) over the side and skipped a step--THE PLUG. Well an inflated RIB might not actually sink, but it can get low enough in the water to cast some doubt. So, I reeled her in enough to stop the flood and climb down to install the plug. It's amazing how much faster water runs in that little hole than it'll run out. What with the extra water and human weight along with nice summertime wakes, Aslan did tend to favor that side a bit which is not normally detectable on your standard launch evolution. Clearly, I exceeded the rating and probably the cushion--all with the boom at about horizontal.

Most likely, that someone won't make that mistake again. Wish I could blame it on 2020.

We had considered a stern lift but the cost steered us back to a davit. That and our top deck has a large unused area all the way aft that is a perfect place to stow a tender.

This is an area where it is not a good idea to save some money. Do it right.

I like the freedom lifts. I was at the grand banks yard today and half the new boats have them.

Welcome aboard to the FlyBridge SADEY! Youll find answers to questions from real yacht owners there; not the "what ifs", as in what if the planet changes magnetic poles in the next 1000 years? Will the dink swing the other direction and crash into the SAT TV gear?? ws

Thanks to a Trivvers dweller I now have an 18"L X 4.5" OD X 4" ID aluminum tube on its way to me. Hopefully it will slip over my current standpipe. If not I'll have someone mill a few thousandth off the ID to make it fit. I plan to have a cap welded on the top so it slides down and stays put. I feel confident this will work and be safe. My current pipe is from Marquipt and installed correctly. The only difference between my pipe and the new ones are a .5" OD. New pipes are simply an aluminum one piece extruded pipe with a 1" thick wall. My pipe is an aluminum 4" OD pipe sleeved and welded to create a 1"+ thick wall. I also found a yard here in Lauderdale to completely refurb, paint and test the new to me davit before sending it north to live. The PO of our boat had a 14' Whaler with a 50HP Merc and a ton of stuff in the dink. I'm sure he was pushing 1500lbs each lift. We are gong to purchase a 14' AB Oceanus with a 60-70HP. So even with all the required stuff plus we'll be well under the 1500lbs rating of our davit and standpipe. Thank you for all the suggestions!

Dave,
Take a look at Highfields. They are very light with the aluminum hull and the dealer in Holland, MI does a great job of setting them up really nice and customizing them the way you want. I have an 12' with a 25 Suzuki. There are other in our marina with the 11' and the 13' and we all love them. They are a dry ride and fast since they are so light.

I’ll give them a call. We are on the hunt for a decent used one down here but if we’re unsuccessful we will buy new. The admiral said we have to have one when the boat splashes in May.

You have a picture of your 12' on the fly bridge (if that is where you stow it)? I am looking at the SP 360.

I don't have a good picture on my phone. I'll see what else I can up with. For now, this is all I have.

Be sure to have the yard doing the work certify, in writing on the work order and invoice, that the modified standpipe will perform safely and as originally designed, built and tested by the OEM.
