  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
46' CONVERTIBLE-Series I (1974 - 1981)
I need some advise installing a low profile davit 500# on my 46' Conv. The davit will be available next week (private purchase). I am also purchasing the 11 ft. Carib inflatable (2004), its 2006 25 HP engine two stroke and all related deck mounting hardware. Negotiated price for everything $4800.
All items are in a very good condition. The davit was used to lift the Carib and motor so there is no capacity issue.
What do you think about the price?

How difficult is the installation of the davit for a DIY handy with tools and some F/glassing experience if needed.
Here is the plan:
The davit to be located on the port side of the foredeck, above the master stateroom closet.
The support pipe (4")? coming thru the deck to be mounted on its base plate screwed inside the closet floor. Will this be ok or do I need additional reinforcement?

The existing deck plate welded on the support pipe may be an issue by not being flush with the deck due to deck contour. Any thoughts on that?
Thank you all in advance

Michael

We have a 42'C with the davit mounted in the same location you are contemplating. Our davit pipe runs through the closet directly next to a common wall so that minimal room is sacrificed. The pipe goes through the closet floor as well and attaches below the floor. Ours has a 110v winch attached. The davit location is ideal as it minimally affects space on the foredeck and does not hamper moving forward rapidly. As for the deck plate not matching the contour of your foredeck, I have seen tapered spacers made of teak, and of stainless steel painted to match. As for the price, I've been shopping intensely for either a 10'-11' inflatable or an 11' Boston Whaler... Your deal was a very good price, at least out here on the west coast.

In 2003, I bought a 10' Avon RIB w/15 hp 2 stroke for $3500. As I recall, the old style pipe davit cost about $1500 while the new low profile types were $6500. So no need for buyers remorse, you got a good deal.

On Passages, the dink was mounted about 1' from the port bow rail. BIG MISTAKE! This cause the boat to sit with a slight list which became more pronounced when on plane. ( Needed tabs to fly level)

When setting up your install, try to mount the dink center deck. If this does not work, consider whether your vessel exhibits any natural list at rest and use the dink to offset.

There is a third option to offset balance, but I don't like it. Add ballast weight.

I have a 1980 46C. My davit was installed when I purchased my boat. It is installed as above with minor differences.

My davit pipe runs along the closet wall to your left (as you look into the closet) and just inside the door(front area of the closet). It is mounted to the plywood floorboard via its base plate. The pipe takes up minimal room in the closet.

That location of the davit will allow you to mount the dingy cradle on the foredeck centerline. This will avoid the listing issues.

I have an AB 10'6" Rib mounted as far aft as it (boat/cradle) can without hitting the house. It doesn't adversely affect the trim of the boat or access around the foredeck for anchor/line handling.

Sounds like you got a good deal and it's a great addition......

Good Luck

I have the same set up as Hattitude on my 78 46C. Works great.

Good luck...

I had to do this to the forward center hatch. I can open the little hatch when the dingy is off the boat.
