1971 41C, the aft starboard strake or fin was damaged right at the transom. does any one know if there are pre-formed replacements for the original painted wood ones. Mine is split off about 8" from the end, the rest of the remaining 6' or so is fine. I have already bent the rub rail back to its original shape and it lays right back over the repaired screw hole in the back of the transom, but the end of the strake inside of the rub rail looks really bad.

Thanks for any help....Mark

You can have a carpenter just replace the wood that is missing and he will shape to match. Then just prime and paint. There was a section on my stbd aft spray rail that was damaged and I just had a carpenter repair it then we primed and painted. You'd never know a repair was made!

Slight hijack:

I am actually missing the whole thing on my boat, but it looks like accessing the inside holes (for through bolts) is not possible since I can't climb around the gas tank. Am I right, or is it fine to just screw'n'glue to the side?

Is this a good use for the newer 'plastic lumber'? I like the idea of color throughout the piece of HDPE, but at a local park some benches were renewed with this and sagged/drooped in the sun almost as soon as completed.

Mine were rotting and soon to deteriorate. I found a replacement made of pvc. Bought it from http://www.barbourcorp.com/marine-steelrubrail.htm
I had to cut the old bolts off since I couldn't access the nuts on the inside due to the tanks. This stuff can flex to fit the hull, can be cut/shaped like wood. After prepping the holes I lag bolted to the hull. The ends get cut and shaped, and I dado cut the rubrail channel flat to accept the old flat rubrail. Looks like new now and there's no maintenance. I don't remember which i used but it was either R1065, R1268, R1297 or R 1242.
