Looks like I may be replacing the salon AC and would like to get a rough idea ofbwhat this should cost.
The unit is a 30,000 btu, r22 split system with the compressor in the er and the other unit in the Flybridge. I would like to go back with a split system with the newer freon. Also would appreciate any thoughts on what are good brands. I have heard about ocean breeze but don't know if they make good stuff or not. Thanks for your time.

Ocean breeze has made a few A/C units for me plus condensers for my ice machines, his units are made from name brand components, ss frames, and designed for marine environment. He's here in Stuart, I should be home for a few days and if you need a hand let me know.

Since you don't mention what is actually wrong with what you have now, I am going to guess you've already eliminated the simple stuff like worn out run or start capacitors, low R charge, bad relay, etc and your compressor is worn out.

Ocean Breeze makes a replacement condenser (which is where the compressor is) which uses a modern refrigerant compatable with R22 such that you can still use your original air handler. Also you have to consider the control. If going with Cruisair for example you have to upgrade to the SMX II controller (plus, either new wiring to the control or an adapter kit) whereas with Ocean Breeze you can continue with the original SMX control.

I don't know the cost for 30K BTU but I just priced 12K Ocean Breeze condenser at $1,480. If you were OTOH to replace the entire system, condenser, handler and control... with new Cruisair equipment... it would cost a fortune.. like maybe $10,000+ (inclu labor)...some of which depends on how hard it is to get to the air handler, which are sometimes in very difficult to get to places.

(on edit)

Forgot to mention, if the compressor is bad and you do keep the original air handler it is best to use a "flush kit" to clean out the system line before installing the new condenser as oil from the bad compressor could have escaped into the system and will muck up the new system eventually.
