  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
53' MOTOR YACHT (1969 - 1988)
Im down on the boat getting ready for sea trial and discovered one trans is a bit low. Can anyone confirm the correct fluid for me? Need the info quick, buyers arrive at noon...

-The engine oil is the recommended fill per Allison. So if you are using the "normal" oil for your DDs - 40 WT CF2, that's what goes in the tranny.

OTOH, if you don't know what's in there, it might be best to drain/refill with new engine oil though you don't have much time to do that! :)

Also - check the oil with the transmission up to temp and running in neutral, NOT COLD, unless you have inscribed a correct "cold" mark on the dipstick (which is a handy thing to do).

+1 on 40W. Same as the engines use.

FWIW, and not all that relevant...

I think it's interesting that the Allison manual says to use the oil that's used in the engine as opposed to stating a specific weight/type of oil. IOW, if you have the Allison behind an engine that uses a different weight of oil than 40 wt CF2, you use THAT engine oil.

Back some 40 years ago when we bought the boat everyone was using Gulf HD30 in the engines and transmissions I switched to Lubrication Engineers Monolec GFS40 in the mains but have continued to use 30W in the trans. Between live baiting and deep drop where you bang the trans out of gear every 15-20 seconds for hours on end I've never had a trans failure. I do change oil and filters on a regular basis.

I thought it was truffle oil. Thanks for the clarification. The EVOO is much cheaper.

Truffle oil on a piece of warm Italian bread sounds good for breakfast

I did the same with my Allisons, 40wt in the engines and 30wt in the gears. PO did the same too.
