Slowly but surely.

I think I may be the last generation that gets to burn fossil fuel with reckless abandon. I'm gonna enjoy it. That said, an electric dinghy would be perfect.

Why am I thinking a back up battery for the VHF is a good idea in the Exumas?

So, it’s a battery powered surfboard?

Gnarly, dude.

Green in name only.

50 amp charger will take 10 hours. That's a lot of generator time burning fossil fuels to get a few hours of running.

Batteries are a storage device. Power needs to be generated.

Full size 23' Ski Boat

Q: How much run time will the system provide?

The run time will depend on how you use the system. In a typical watersports use is about 2-3 hours not including reserved capacity for returning to the dock.

Q: How long does it take to charge the system?
AC: 10 hours onboard charger at 240 V/ 50 A
DC: 4 hours on 25 kW electric vehicle charger
Supercharge: 1.5 hours at 80 kW

Q: How much does it cost to charge the battery pack?
Approximately $12 based on current national average rate.

80kw at 240 volts is over 330 Amps.

That's not a simple $500 charger to add to the boathouse.

Include the thousands of dollars to run cable and install a $30k charger. It's not so cost effective.

Convert that to Bahamian electrical costs and your looking at about $150 to charge for three hours of run time...LOL. Our CC wakeboard boat would but about 1-2 gallon an hour of normal use depending how heavy you were on the throttle. We are going to have many years of hybrid before electric only will be practical. Year year the technology keeps advancing....we’ll get there...eventually.

And the majority of the US power grid is run on coal or natural gas. So... a coal powered boat... with toxic batteries that will end up in the landfill leaching into our water... manufactured with lithium that is mined with more toxic land stripping chemicals and child slave labor in undeveloped nations. Neat. Isn't this going backwards?:rolleyes:

Hopefully once all the tree huggers switch over to electric, either solar or nuclear we will be swimming in old dinosaur juice. Then we will be able to run our old classics like speed boats. Well there's always hope.

I would love to believe that. However, I suspect that as the producers and distributers shrink they will have to increase the cost to make up for lost volume. (Costs as much to have a fuel dock selling half the amount).

What I fear even more is that as the younger generation takes over they will OUTLAW the use of copious amounts of fossil fuel. Look at London. You are not allowed to drive your 20 year old diesel in there anymore. I see it in other places.

No, I think I am the last generation who will be able to push the throttle forward with reckless abandon and they will make me pay for it.
