on mine (1970), it's in the genset room. just to stbd of centerline at the front. sits on the floor (or a piece of wood on the floor), unlikely to get wet... if it does, I'd have a lot of other worries!

the west catalogue shows FE241 systems at $650 for 600cuft which I'm guessing is about right for each 53MY ER, and probably for the genset room too.

they also list FM200annd HFC227E which are safe for occupied spaces... but well over twice the price of FE241

Is there any interconnect for the FE241 type systems so a helm light/alarm can be activated? (Or maybe are they so loud you'd hear them go off over the engines?)

Doug

Yes.

The FE241 systems have a pressure switch (normally closed) on the head itself that opens when the system fires. This is normally wired to an alarm horn AND the shutdown relay box. If continuity is lost for any reason (including the system going off!) the alarm sounds and the engines are shut down.

The alarm horn system that comes with them has an override switch to permit restarts after the bottle fires (or in the event of an electrical fault) BUT it must be used with care, for obvious reasons.
