  1. OWNER - I own a Hatteras Yacht
Hatteras Model
Not Currently A Hatteras Owner
It is with a heavy heart that I announce the sale of Bella Sophia. I have owned her for almost 13 years. I have put a lot of hours into her over the years. The family has also gotten much enjoyment from her. I am thankful to give my kids a taste of the boating lifestyle and adventure. Some of our fondest memories have been cruising in the Bahamas. I would like to say THANK YOU to all of you here on HOF. With your advice and knowledge, I have been able to acomplish many repairs and upgrades. I hope that my comments on this site have helped others. I will continue to lurk on this site as I enjoy the boating discussion. I also love Hatteras. I am not getting out of boating. I will look for my next boat. Something a little newer>10 years old. P.s. its amazing how much stuff ends up on your boat after 12 years.

It’s a sad day when you have to part with something that you almost call family. Best wishes in your new adventure. By the way how much are you asking?

What's next on your list?

It's a new adventure for sure.

Good luck! I also have my boat for 13 years by now it is a part of life for my family and I

I lived aboard a trawler for 10 and when it sold as I off loaded it I shed a tear. Many memories!

You keep Bella Sophie's memories to have always!

Find the next adventure

Thanks guys. I listed Bella for $595k. I got $450k for her. Not sure about the market but I feel that I could have gotten another $50k for her if I waited it out? She breezed through survey with an Above Average from the surveyor. Isn’t it a shame that a new center console costs more than a 78ft motor yacht. I have my eye on a 2008 78ft Cheoy Lee Bravo. I don’t know much about Cheoy Lee. I know that their owners forum is terrible. I’ll have to work on that.

She was a beauty and I agree you could of gotten $500k for her if you had waited for the season. Good luck with the next boat!

I hear the got better over the years. Especially their larger vessels.

You can still hang out here. It's just that we won't know the answers to your questions. Sorry you are selling Bella, no one should ever sell their boat. Their estate should worry about that.

I would never sell my Hatteras for cheoy lee. I have friends that had choey lee's and they were nothing but trouble. Sorry to tell you that news. Good looking boats but just not a Hatteras .

They may have built some good ones, but I don't think they have ever built anything as good as a Hatteras.

Watch a Boat test video on a Choy Lee Bravo 72 . They said it weighed about 95,000 lbs if I Romberg correctly. Then I watch one on the new Hatt 70 and I think it weighed 150,000 lbs. I quest if the Choy Lee was built properly with light weight materials that difference could be ok, but usually in the boat building industry the more weight the higher the cost to build unless you are using a lot of carbon fiber. I seriously doubt a 72 CL would weight 95000 pounds...

I did quite a bit of research last year on boats of that size range and vintage and while Cheoy Lees are pretty good I wasn't impressed by the performance, fuel burn and range. They are not light boats and need quite a bit of power to cruise on plane. They often need the larger optional engine packages to perform adequately

Also looked at Horizon and other Far East boats and the end the buyers ended up with an 84 Lazzara. 15 months and 500 hours later they have no regret. The quality and performance in fantastic. Being lighter the ride is not as good is rough stuff as a hatteras 80 but it s an acceptable trade off for the 32kts top speed and the low fuel burn: 74usg at 20kts on 45% load. 65% cruise yields 26kts on 115usg. Most Horizon, Cheoy Lee, Johnson and even Hargrave struggle to cruise at 20/21 on 100/110 Gph

I believe that CL uses fiberglass tanks, a big plus of aluminum

Pascal, just checked the video, says dry weight of 82,218 and with fuel and people on board for test 92,600 lbs.

I checked other sites, yeah That s light for a 72 footer. Good performance and fuel too, at least with IPS. They definitely stepped upmtheir game on this one

The 80 Hatteras is 193,000 lbs. The 80 Ocean Alexander is 153,000 lbs. The 78 Cheoy Lee is 134,000 lbs. The Hatteras has a 1 foot wider beam. The CL has the 3412E engines. Don’t know much about Cats but I have heard they are good engines.

Boat is fully vacated. Last things off the boat is Jenny and I and the LGYC burgee.

Amazing how much crap you accumulate over 13 years.

The 3412Es are probably the best in that HP range (1400hp). I put 3500 hours over 8 years on a pair of these, when the boat was sold at 5500 hours / 13 years survey and oil analysis were clean. No smoke on start up. Never did anything but routine maintenance except a fuel cooler. Parts are reasonable too. Just had to replace the main computer on one of the 1650hp C32 i run and it was $3300. Not cheap but a fraction of the cost on an MTU or MAN
