I think my 6v92's with 32v system use 4/0. You should be okay with that.

I found that the rubber backed industrial carpet runners work well. You see them in offices a lot on tile floors. NON slip, come in about 5 colors. I use the brown ones. If you lease them and they get too dirty you exchange them for new ones. I pull mine out and hose them clean-- they dry quick and never rot.

my 53c is getting fit with the heavy duty rubber mats typically found in restaurant kitchens. soft on your knees, non-slip, no sound harmonics, and easy to remove and clean dockside. diamondplate is pretty to look at, but that's the end of that story for me...

I contacted the engineers at Hatteras thanks to some contacts from Steve and they informed me that they often over engineer electrical systems (which i already knew) but in the case of battery cable that it is ok to use 4/0 in place of 250 MCM and I have a letter from them to reinforce that fact.

This past weekend we had a "professional" cleaner come in and clean the engine room. Talk about a disaster. Waste of my time and money. With little more than a luke warm pressure washer and large shopvac the ER is clean now but nothing that I couldn't have done in a few days. Now the fiberglass seems to be slowly drying out. I have some small space heaters in the bilges that are extracting moisture from all sorts of places.

From there we have the fun project of stripping and painting!

Does anyone know if SAM's has battery boxes?

SAMs has 12v battery boxes but not the longer boxes for the 8v batts. Steve told me he is looking for a new guy to manufacture them as the guy that they were using was not doing a quality job. I needed 4 boxes, so I had to re-glass the ones that I had. Once they were solid again, I coated them with Grizzly Grip inside and out. They look great, now we'll see how they hold up.

I was thinking about getting some of the 12v boxes and cutting them and adding length. Are they wide enough?

The original arrangment had 3 long battery boxes and one side by side box. I want to use 4 long boxes. Two on the center decking two inboard of the wing tanks. The forward wall of the ER is cluttered enough with the 12v boxes.

It is always nice to have two different DC voltages on the boat.

Call Steve and get the dimensions. They may work if you lengthen them. Also, Tom Slane has the molds for the 12v batt boxes as well. He thought he could make the 8v boxes for me, but never got back to me so I assumed that he didn't have the molds for those.

Just an update for those who care!

We have been working hard all winter and spring! We stripped and painted the bilges (big job), have been painting the ER bulkheads, doing fiberglass core repair, refurbishing all windows, cleaning oiled wood, building furniture frames and just about anything else. We are in the process of making celing panels. The hull is scraped and sanded and the props are back from the shop. We have crossed many bridges but there are many that we are going to have to cross in the near future. We are going for a July 31 finish date... My brother is hell bent on getting that date. I will have a new video coming out at www.cleaniedini.com as well as an article in Passage Maker Magazine and Live Aboard Magazine. I will get some new photos up.

Last I heard Dini said the boat had a buyer that fell thru and she was still for sale partly restored for $450K (I think) from the bank. I'm guessing about last fall. One might guess in todays world the bank may be tired of forking out money for the old lady.
A fine boat in the right hands, its a shame.

I'm afraid some banker(s) will lose their jobs over this one! "Hey, let's spend six figures + and refit this old abandoned Hatteras we just reposessed instead of (the usual) just liquidating it and suing for our losses". I wonder how far that logic will get them in this depressed boat market. I don't think it was a good idea for the bank when they started this restoration back in 2006, much less in today's market.

It is (was) a great boat and a real nice guy (Dini) they hired, but you have to wonder how such a decision was made by a bank to refit an old and badly neglected repo boat. Hmmm. Only time will tell.

I wish the boat and Dini the best of luck and an uninterrupted flow of cash from the bank!

Agreed, I was on board the boat last year. It was a sound vessel, Dini had the energy and the crew to refit her properly, but it was not going to be a cheap or quick fix.

I also suspect the bank had a change of heart half way into the refit. A shame really. $450k for a partial refit will not sell in todays market.

I can report that this project is still in full swing. By sheer coincidence, we were docked next to this boat in Mystic the last couple of days and spent the better part of the afternoon with Dini and his brother Harrison. We even met the bankers briefly and showed them around our boat to give them some idea of what "after" might look like!

Dini and Harrison are two impressive young guys. Dini is a licensed ship's engineer and has a job working an EPA boat in New York in addition to his detailing and yacht maintenance business and this project (which certainly rivals Bill's in scope).

I encouraged Dini to post here again; he said he has been too busy to do that or update his site. After meeting them and seeing the boat, I can certainly understand why!

Regardless, it was a real pleasure meeting them, and I encourage anyone in the neighborhood to stop by and visit them. The boat is at Seaport Marine, which is walking distance to downtown Mystic the Seaport at the last set of fixed wooden docks on the south end. (Note bene: Do NOT use this as a marina, it was the crappiest and most expensive we have been to on the east coast from Mystic to Marathon.)

Hey guys,

So we are doing it. I think most people never thought they would see the day but it is getting done slowly and painfully. We are on track with the budget of about 240,000 for a bare boat with the addition of custom electronics package for the future buyer.

We are finishing up the galley and salon as we speak with the pilot house soon to come. The interior is coming nicely. The exterior is also coming along slowly. I don't know that I would ever want a boat this old without having this sort of work done. We have found so many initial building flaws that makes it difficult think what unknows lurk around a boat without this work done.

I am learning a tremendous amount and making a bunch of friends along the way. We have adjusted some of our goals and mods but the boat is coming out very nicely. The woodwork has been my brothers job and has been a real trip. Selecting from full dimention lumber (Teak, Spanish Cedar, Mahogany) and making it into the interior of the boat.

The engines run great and the engine room refits continue. I am in the process of finishing up my AC work (6 of 8 AC's now operating) and starting on my quality 12V system to replace the single breaker that was present.

I will be better about posting photos. Sorry about that.

As the boat comes together it is a good time for interested parties to take a look as we are always looking for suggestions on finishing.

I touched base with Dini some time last year when I was thinking of moving up. He said that the bank stopped paying and that they still owed him ALOT of money. Imagine that! He was such a nice guy with such energy and enthusiasm, I hate that this happened to him.

As much as I hate to say it, I had a bad feeling in my gut about this one from the beginning. It really made NO sense to me that a bank would take on the refit of an old boat that they had to repo to hopefully get more of their money back. It was a losing proposition from the start. That was some bad judgement on the bank's part and poor Dini got caught up in the middle. I wish him the best wherever he is and hopefully he got some money out of that bank!.

I seem to remember that the bank gave up on the project and the boat was for sale as is. Pretty much what I expected to happen.

The bank put the boat on Yatch World for $850,000. Search Hatteras 65' 1982. I saw the boat Oct 2007 when Cleanei first started working on her. The HOF judges would not be happy with the re-fit.
