Cleaniedini 65C Restoration Project

I agree with Sky and thoward,

Keep the systems original and operable. Engines and running gear in top shape. the Interior return to factory original and nutral in taste. as for electronics, I woulden't install any fancy electronics if you are planning to sell the boat.

Took a ride to visit the forums newest project - Cleaniedini 65' LRC. My first impression was WOW- this is an incredible boat!

Dini and his crew have been busy removing years of "stuff" including all fabrics. The pic below show the boat stripped to the bone. You could see many places where wallpaper has been removed only to reveal that beautiful afromosa wall treatment underneath.

This will be a great project to follow.

Also had a chance to watch the Dini crew in action. Below is an engine room shot with Dini (center) discussing project planning with surveyor & project consultant Dexter Holiday (right) and Jack (left), documenting on film.

Cathy was working upstairs.

Good luck Dini - if any questions, you can bring 'em here.

Very cool project indeed. can't wait to see the progress on such a great boat.

I thought for sure that filters would take the salt out... Sorry, two separate thoughts, first being water filters so the water on the boat doesn't taste like junk, second find a replacement for the water maker that was removed.

Too bad you didn't get any photos of Deanna, the real brains and looks behind the project...

See the look in Dinis face in the engine room ..yeah seems like they where talking mo money mo money... but hey I gotta say he picked the right boat for the project LRC's really hold there value I wouldn't be surrprised if he had it sold by the end of the project..if it comes out right??? of course....

Re: 65C Restoration Project

The Commodore of the Hatteras LRC Club and I visited Lady Slipper in Mid-December. She is in better shape than I had anticipated yet sadly she is far too big of a project for me to take on. But tempting, very tempting.

The boat, 1982 hull number 1 of the 65 LRCs. The 65s where created by stretching the 58 molds and the 58 was discontinued at that time. She is owned by a local Bank who repossessed the boat for the third time last summer. As I understand it from Dini and the bank, Dini and his band of cleanies have been hired to first stabilize her deterioration and begin restoration. To my eye he has done that. The boat is available for those hardy Hatteras lovers looking for something to do. I still might be one such fool hardy soul. Somebody talk me out of it.

I was on the boat for about three hours if anyone is interested in details contact me via PM.

I am going to post a numbe of photos on my site tonight and link to them. I will try to describe each one. Pictures are worth a thousand words. Dave tells the truth. This week we are going to have the second video out. In addition I am going to meet with Peter Legnos on the hull of the boat. I have been focusing my efforts in the engine room and I have found some gremlins that are going to be attended to. I am not overly impressed with the decking so I am going to reinforce the ER decking with some more 2" aluminum angle and then put some angle facing up around the perimeter of the decking. That way the diamond plate can be simply dropped in and secured but easily removable so that I can continue to clean up the tank tops and change out old fuel lines.

The fun part is just starting.
I got my first small test load of LEDs in the mail today so I am going to make up the first test 32v light that will be used throughout the boat. I also got a 110v bulb that i can put in fixtures and it is SWEET. It has a very intense bright white light. I may use a combo of flouresent screw in bulbs and screw in bulbs. This will help to take a load off the electrical system as well as enable more lights to be installed on the same infastructure.

I also got my reefer recovery unit so i can finally evacuate the AC system and take the units out for testing, service and paint!!! YEA

I have put some things on the back burner, one being the woodwork, the second being finishing up the bathrooms. I feel that I need to get some other stuff figured out before we move into that area. If Legnos give the boat a seal of approval I will start to paint the upper deck, if not then i gotta wait for repairs.

Regards
Dini

I'm interested in the 32v LED's. When you figure that part out, post some pictures and give details on what to use, how to convert, and where to find those. If you have good luck with that, I may do the same thing to mine.

Dini
Did you confirm if the hull is cored or solid glass (as I contend)?
Hal

I belive it is glass but don't quote me, i have no books and no real way of knowing. Legnos should come this week to check out all the fiberglass

Got some photos up:

Didn't have time to label them all but it is going along pretty nicely.
I will be posting my custom LED instructions so you can make any DC light into an array of LEDs!!!!!

Anyone know what the stock CruiseAir model numbers are on those boats? Any idea if it was R12 in them?

I would think they have R22, but I can't say for sure.

I am going to call Hatteras tommorow but CruiseAir said it was R12... The mystery continues...

All of the older Cruiseair units I've charged use R-22.

Go Alfisti!

Good Luck Dini!

Byron

If cruisair says its R12 then what makes you think it's not. R12 was used way back. The units are probably not original. If you are reworking the system new units are probably called for especially if its an R12 system.

If Cruisair syas it's R12, then it probably is but I think I would have the model/serial numbers handy and call back to get a different tech guy and see what he says. I'd even call a Cruisair dealer or two and ask them because they actually service them regularly. Unfortunately sometimes you CAN get different answers to the same question when you speak to different people. Good idea to call Hatteras and they can at least get you the model/serial numbers to call Cruisair back with.

Like I said in my post, all the older units I have ever charged are R-22. I keep a 30gal jug of it and guages on board. This setup has properly charged my 1967, 1969 and 1972 model Hatteras' over the years. That is what makes me think that most older Cruisairs are R-22.

If you look at the pics of the 65LRC's A/C systems, they are almost positively the original units. Look at the blue color and older style decals. They haven't looked like that for more than 15yrs. These units do often last 20-40yrs, depending on use. Often just the compressor will be retrofitted into the condensing unit but that would not change the type of freon that it uses.

My 1983 Cruiseairs took R22 and my 1985 Cruiseairs do as well. Like I said before, they could be R12, but I would think that they are more likely R-22. Sometimes you can find a label stuck to the caps at the high and low pressure taps.
