Re: Cat c7’s

The pricing and availability on Detroit stuff is going higher and getting harder to get. After some homework considering the c9 cat as an option as it may be a better option

I'd opt for the qsc's over the cat's, but I'm biased. I've had 6bta's and 6cta's. Great motors, parts easy to get, and easy to work on. Matter of fact, what about a pair of 6cta's instead of the cat's or qsc's?

Re: Cat c7’s

Unfortunately the power of the 6cta mechanicals is light for the boat. The qsc’s would be choice 1. But not finding a good used set and the remans are too costly to justify

Re: Cat c7’s

And he's in 50-60k and STILL has 6-71s that go how many hours before top end overhauls 1500-2000?

I have a better idea. Rip it all out and stick some 400-500hp outboards on the back.
Top end overhaul on a 6-71? Where is that from??

Re: Cat c7’s

What is the cost for a pair of factory reman QSC with new gears these days? 4 years ago i paid about $75k for a set of factory reman 6CTAs with new ZFs.

I think I ve been hearing the $3k per hole DD rebuilt for as long as I ve owned my 53… or almost 20 years now. I guess DD parts and labor hasn’t gone up and have been immune to bidflation. :). Any real up to date numbers?

Re: Cat c7’s

Pascal, a pair of qsc’s and gears was quoted about 110k. Plus labor and extras I’d say that 3k ish per hole plus recon head injectors, blower, turbo puts an in frame about 35k or so per side.

Re: Cat c7’s

Liners/piston and heads.
What drug or planet transportation has altered your rational?
You short a 6-71 to 2000 hours and suggest outboards?

I paid $70k for two complete inframes on 8v71ti's within the past few months so the numbers should be reasonably up to date. The mechanic who did them was back out at the boat the other day fixing some other stuff and said he's having issues with getting engine parts across the board not just detroits. The supply chain thing never really ended for them in his industry, he says it's actually gotten worse from 6 months ago.

that's what j&t was telling me. parts are getting tough to get, and more expensive. they've seen a 10 fold increase on some parts, think it was connecting rods.

Good info. Thanks So that s about 4300 per cylinder for an in frame which doesn’t include the camshafts and a few other things at each end. And obviously not the gears. Makes sense to repower even with the extra costs to make new engine beds

As to the supply chain, on the “office” we ve been waiting 2 months for an MTU 16V2000 crankshaft. Now MTU (which owns DD) says it will here in October. We started an in frame for which we had all the parts but when they dropped the pan they discovered damage to the crank

I need to pull the invoices to be 100% accurate but this is pretty close. +/- $10k of that was new turbos, another thousand or so was new exhaust blankets, another couple thousand went to exhaust pieces that weren't totally rotten yet but close enough that they insisted on replacing them. Another thousand went to converting the transmissions to external spin-on filters. The engines were +/- $50k for both sides before all the extras. The rest of it went to 'while we're in there' type stuff. I don't think I could have gotten that job done on a timely basis now. I know of a couple boats in the marina who are waiting on parts and have been for months. Everybody I talk to is putting off doing anything to their engines unless they just have no choice. One guy has Yanmars and can't get parts, it's not just a detroit thing.

With this covid mess, whenever it seems like life might finally return to something resembling normal, there always seems to be some new problem that you never thought of.
