Carpet Cleaning on the Boat

All of those "specialty chemicals" are a waste of money. One of the absol;ute best things to use for the removal of grease/oil/ink/spilled food/spilled drinks/kool aid/gum/pet stains/rust stains etc. is WD40. It is very safe to use. We have our salon carpet shampooed by a carpet company a couple times per year, and they use WD40 instead of specialty brand name cleaners. It is probably one of the best cleaners there is. The WD40 website lists over 2000+ uses for it.

Just to be clear - DO NOT USE WD40 LUBRICANT TO CLEAN CARPET.

What you are referring to is Spot Shot, Carpet stain remover by the WD40 company.

Yeah, I was going to chime in, but I've said enough already. I was crindging at the thought of WD-40 on carpet. I would think it would cut the grease spot or disolve a spot, but its a penetrant. So, getting it out of the carpet would be the hard part. It doesnt dry in the crystaline form so you can vacuum it back out. It would prolly go to the bottom of the carpet and disolve the glue in the backing. ouch..

NO I AM NOT! USE IT! I am referring to WD40, the same light mineral spirit formula in the blue and yellow can. It is not marketed as or sold a lubricant by the WD40 Corp. It is a water displacement, hence the "WD", though it has 1000's of uses. Check their website @ WD40. They recommend it. http://www.wd40.com/uses-tips/
It's also great to get grease stains off of your shirts or pants in the laundry, including bright white shirts. Most people know very little about it's recommended uses that actually work.

We have it done twice per year, on off white carpet, and it looks like new each time. I swear by it, and so does my mobile carpet cleaning company.

Thats interesting ...I would like to hear what the carpet manufactures have to say about its use. WD40, says its good for everything. Sounds like the Indian elixer (good for whatever ailes you) on Andy Griffith. ha-ha. It leaves a nice residue on my guns when I used it. I wonder how hard it is to remove from carpet. As long as it gets rinsed out good, I guess its OK.

And, how much more or less caustic is it compared to what's in all of the other cleaners?

I use it on grease/oil stains on my laundry, including white shirts. Zero residue or oil staining, and NO smell of it in the dryer or washer after. I tried it after seeing it on their website a few years ago.

Funny you should say that. I'm just looking at a gease stain on my pants I got from climbing in my engine room. The washer didnt get it out. Next time I'm using WD40. I hope the stain hasent set in though. Thanks for the advise. I wonder if its good on Isenglass? just kidding...

Huh? I could see it being effective on grease, oil & tar, but food, rust and pet stains too?

I would be cautious.

When my son was a little guy, he grabbed some crayons and wrote all over some white painted walls in the house. WD40 cleaned off the crayon and then a light spray of 409 took off the WD40 residue. I sure was glad that I didn't have to repaint.

Next time clean the pants with hand cleaner before you throw them in the washer. I have used odorless mineral spirits on eisenglass, but prefer "210" Cleaner.

Absolutely be cautious! It does not work on everything, such as Eisenglass, but it works wonders on many other things. Most people think it is just a lubricating or penetrating oil, but that is totally incorrect.

We did a cherry Kool Aid cleanup in the boat that my 5 year old terrorist did. After her and I using towels to soak up what we could and a wet rag, it dried into a nice pink stain. I finally got out the WD40 and my Spot Bot carpet shampooer, and after it ran it's 5 minute cycle, the spot was completely gone.

Brake cleaner is good stuff too. I use it on shoe soles with a rag. Takes 'em right to clean and evaporates quickly. Brake cleaner on oil stains in white carpet is another good use.

Brake cleaner is perchlorethylene. Same stuff the dry cleaners use. That will work wonders on oily stains.
